What is computer network?

INTRODUCTI
ON
Mention one network device you know?
NETWORK TOPOLOGY

SAMUEL.S
MPTS 2013
By the end of the lesson you should able to :

OBJECTIVES I. Define network topology

II. State the(5)basic type of network topology

 Network : interconnection of 2 or more independent computer
and peripherals.

NETWORK  Topololgy :the way in which computer are interconnected

TOPLOGY together.
 It is a layout of a region or area that covered by the network
 There are two types of network topologies:
 Physical topolology
 Logical topology

Types of Physical topology emphasizes the physical layout of the

topology connected device and nodes.

Logical toplogy focuses the plattern of the transfer between

network nodes.
There are five basic topologies possible:
1. Bus topology
Types of 2. Star topology
network 3. Ring topology
topology 4. Mesh topology
5. Hybrid topology
In bus topology, all nodes(or devices)are connected to a common
communication medium. Usually, a central cable is used as
communication medium. This cable is called Bus. The computers or
nodes are connected to the bus through interface connector.

BUS
TOPOLOGY
ADVANTAGES
Its very simple and easy to install
It requires small length of cable to connect computers
It is less expensive

Advantage and If one node fails other nodes not affected

disadvantage of
bus topology DISADVANTAGE
Cable fails the whole network fails
 no security
No redundancy
In star topology, each device has a dedicated point to point link
only a central controller, usually called a hub or switch

STAR
TOPOLOGY
ADVANTAGES
Easy to install
No disruption to the network when connecting or removing
device

Advantages and Easy to detect faults

disadvantage of
star topology DISADVANTAGE
Require more cabling g than bus topology
If the hub fails all the nodes attached are disable
More expensive than bus because of the cost of hub
 Cable forms closed ring or loop, with all computers and device
arranged along ring.
 Here each device has a dedicated connection with two device
on either side
 The signal passed in on e direction from device to device until
Ring topology it reaches the destination and each device have repeater.
ADVANTAGE
Easy to install
Easy to configure
Fault identification is easy

Advantage and
disadvantage of DISADVANTAGE

ring topology Unidirectional traffic

Break in single ring affect entire network
 In mesh topology each node is directly connected to some or all
the other nodes present in the network.
 Every device has a dedicated point to point link to every other
device.

Mesh topology
ADVANTAGE
 no traffic problem as there are dedicated point to point links for each
computer.
 It has multiple links, so if one route is blocked then other can be accessed for
data communication.
 It provides high privacy and security.

Advantage and  Fault identification is easy because of point-to-point connection.

disadvantage of
mesh topology DISADVANTAGE

Very expensive
Difficult to install
 Hybrid, as the name suggests, is mixture of two different
things. Similarly in this type of topology we integrate two or
more different topologies to form resultant topology.
 This combination of topology is done according to the
Hybrid requirement of the organization

topology
ADVANTAGE
 Reliable : Unlike other networks, fault detection and troubleshooting
is easy in this type of topology.
 Scalable: Its easy to increase the size of network by adding new
components, without disturbing existing architecture.

Advantage and  Flexible: Hybrid Network can be designed according to the

requirements of the organization
disadvantage of
hybrid topology DISADVANTAGE
Complexity of design
Costly infrastructure
