INTRODUCTION

• A teaching method refers to a systematic approach or

strategy employed by educators to impart knowledge and
facilitate learning among students.

• Effective teaching methods engage students, cater to

different learning styles, and encourage active
participation and critical thinking.
TYPES OF TEACHING METHODS

1.Teacher centred teaching method.

2.Learner centred teaching method.
3.Interactive centred teaching method.
TEACHERS CENTERED METHOD

Teachers Centered method deals with

the teacher delivering all of the teacher
and student learns passively.
Examples of Teacher centred teaching method

Examples of Teacher centred teaching method-

1.Lecture based instruction.
2.Structured drill and practices
3.Direct instruction
EXAMPLES OF INTERACTIVE TEACHING
METHOD INCLUDE;
1.Case Studies.
2.Simulation.
3.Role playing.
4. Group Discussion.
Examples of Learners centered Teaching Method
includes;
1.Project Based learning(PBL)
2.Inquiry Based Learning(IBL)
DIRECT INSTRUCTION (LOW TECH)

• Direct instruction is the general term that refers to

the traditional teaching strategy that relies on
explicit teaching through lectures and teacher-led
demonstrations.

• In this method of instruction, the teacher might

play one or all of the following roles:
• Formal Authority: Teachers are in a position
of power and authority.

• Expert: Teachers are in possession of all

knowledge and expertise within the classroom
• Personal Model: Teachers who operate under
the “Personal Model’ style are those who lead
by example, demonstrating to students how to
access and comprehend information.
ADVANTAGES OF DIRECT INSTRUCTION

• It is structured and can be assessed with validity.

• Students have planned experience in teachers centered
method rather than incidental experiences as with
inquiry method (Mason, 1963).
• Teachers prefer to use direct instructions because this is
the most organized way of teaching.
DISADVANTAGES OF DIRECT INSTRUCTION

• The danger with this practice is that there is

no foundation of knowledge built which the
students can draw from in the event that
he/she forgets the memorized.
LECTURE BASED INSTRUCTION

• Lecture-based learning it is a teaching method of

teaching that involves a teacher or instructor delivering
information to a group of students in a classroom setting.
ADVANTAGES OF
LECTURE BASED INSTRUCTION
• You can demonstrate and use any type of media while
teaching.
• It can be effective way to introduce new concepts or
ideas.
• Large material of any subject can be explained in a short
span of time.
DISADVANTAGES OF
LECTURE BASED INSTRUCTION
• It may not be possible for a teacher to pay attention
to all the students in a huge class.

• It can be boring or unengaging for students.

• This type of method can be difficult to assess

whether students are understanding the material.
EXAMPLES OF INTERACTIVEBASED TEACHING METHOD

STRUCTURED DRILL AND PRACTICE

• Structured drill and practice are a teaching method that

focuses on providing students with repeated practice of
specific skills of information.
ADVANTAGES OF STRUCTURED
DRILL AND PRACTICE
• Provides Basic Skills for Students: This gives students an
opportunity to learn certain concepts quickly and effectively.

• Allow Students to Build on Mastered Skills: Students can now

learn higher level skills while accessing mastered skills quickly
and effectively.
DISADVANTAGES OF STRUCTURED
DRILL AND PRACTICE
• Hard for Students to Focus When Done Too Often:
Students who only learn through drills may get distracted
and bored with practice drills, especially if they have
already mastered the skills.

• Students May Not Truly Be Learning: Students may be

relying on just remembering in order to take a test, but are
not really understanding the material properly.
INTERACTIVE METHOD OF TEACHING
• This is a method of teaching that involves the whole class
including the lecturer and this fosters student and learning
collaboration.
CASE STUDIES

• Case method teaching is an active form of instruction

that focuses on a case and involves students learning
by doing.
ADVANTAGES OF CASE STUDY TEACHING METHOD

• Real-world Application: Case studies provide students with

real-world scenarios and challenges, allowing them to apply
theoretical knowledge to practical situations.

• Critical Thinking: Case studies encourage critical thinking

skills by presenting complex problems that require analysis.
DISADVANTAGES OF CASE STUDY TEACHING METHOD

• Time-consuming: Casestudy mayrequires thorough research,

and in-depth analysis, which may extend beyond the allocated
class time.

• Subjectivity: The interpretation of case studies can be

subjective, leading to diverse perspectives and outcomes.
GROUP DISCUSSION METHODS

This is a method of learning where students of the same

educational standard come together to discuss a particular topic
or issue.
ADVANTAGES OF GROUP DISCUSSION
• Enhances learning: Group discussion leads to better memory
recall and understanding.

• To promote critical thinking: Group discussion in teaching

promotes the development of critical thinking.
ADVANTAGES CONT’D

• Helps to Boost Confidence: It offers individuals the

chance to develop their public speaking and
communication abilities while getting input and
encouragement from their colleagues.
DISADVANTAGES OF GROUP DISCUSSION
• It’s a Time-Consuming Process: Participants must listen to one
another, share ideas, debate contrary views, and reach a
conclusion.

• Distractions: Group discussions can be prone to distractions,

such as side conversations, unrelated topics, or lack of focus.

• Peer Pressure: Group discussions can sometimes lead to peer

pressure, where students may feel compelled to conform to the
opinions or ideas of the more dominant group members .
DISADVANTAGES CONT’D
• Peer Pressure: Group discussions can sometimes lead to peer
pressure, where students may feel compelled to conform to the
opinions or ideas of the more dominant group members .
SIMULATION AND ROLE PLAYING

• Simulation is the imitation of real-world processes or

systems over time.

• Role-playing: This is form of interactive learning where

individuals or groups simulate real-life situations and respond to
challenges within those roles.
ADVANTAGES OF SIMULATIONS AND ROLE PLAYING

• Active Engagement: Students actively participate in simulations and

role-playing, promoting experiential learning.

• Skill Development: These methods facilitate the development of

various skills, such as critical thinking, decision-making, and
problem-solving.
LEARNERS CENTERED TEACHING METHOD

This method allows student to participate actively in their

own learning with full engagement from the student.
Examples of learner centered teaching methods are.

• PROJECT BASED LEARNING

• Project-based learning is a teaching method where students
learn by working on real-world projects.

• In nursing, project-based learning can involve students

working on healthcare-related projects that simulate real-
life scenarios.
MERITS OF PROJECT-BASED LEARNING (PBL)

• Real-World Application: PBL allows students to apply their

knowledge and skills to real-world situation.

• Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving: PBL encourages students

to think critically and solve problems independently.
MERITS CONT’D
• Collaboration and Communication:Working in teams, they learn
how to effectively communicate their ideas, listen to others, and
work together towards a common goal.

• Engagement and Motivation:They have a sense of ownership over

their projects, which increases their motivation to learn and
succeed.
DEMERITS PROJECT-BASED LEARNING (PBL)
• Time Management: PBL requires students to manage their time
effectively to complete the project within the given timeframe.

• Group Dynamics: Students must learn to work together,

communicate effectively, and resolve conflicts that may arise within
their project groups.
INQUIRY BASED LEARNING

• Inquiry-based learning encourages students touse

questioning and exploration to investigate real life
problems.
Types Of Inquiry-based Learning(IBL)
1.The Confirmatory Inquiry: The student is provided with
tools and a result but left with the task of proving the result.

2.The guarded Inquiry: Students are left with tools to work

with but are left with finding solution.

3.Open Inquiry:Student are left to pose their own questions

and select their own focus of investigations.
PHASES OF INQUIRY BASED LEARNING
• The orientation phase: This is the input phase where
the teacher introduces the topic of inquiry to the student.
• Conceptualization phase: This is where we
determine if the concept we are working on can be
achieved or not.
• The investigation phase: This is when the curiosity
turn into problem solving through critical thinking.
• The conclusion phase:This is when student get to the
closure of their investigation and put finishing touches to
the work
MERITS OF INQUIRY BASED LEARNING.
• Enhances Critical Thinking: Nursing students learn to evaluate
situations, make informed decisions, and provide quality patient care.

• Promotes Active Learning:This active learning approach allows

students to apply their knowledge and skills in real-world healthcare
scenarios, improving their competence and confidence.
DEMERITS OF INQUIRY BASED LEARNING METHOD.

• Language and Cultural Barriers: Working in a different country

with diverse cultures and languages can pose communication
challenges.

• Limited Resources:Nursing students may need to adapt to

working with fewer resources and find innovative solutions to
provide quality care.
CONCLUSION
• In conclusion, Teachers centered method deals majorly
with the teacher as the sole owner of the class and
student learns passively.
• Learners Centered deals with the student participating to
the teaching method through critical thinking and other
methods
• Interactive Method is a learning through which the student
