• Intersection of A and B is the set of all
elements which belong both to A and B
– it is denoted A ∩ B.
• The union of A and B is the set of all elements
which belong to A or to B or to both
– it is denoted A ∪ B.
Symbolically:
– A ∩ B = {x : x ∈ A and x ∈ B}
– A ∪ B = {x : x ∈ A or x ∈ B or both}.
• Disjoint Sets A and B are said to be disjoint if they
have no elements in common
By extending the definitions of intersection and union
to more than two say A1, A2 ……. An
• Their intersection is:
= A1 ∩ A2 ∩ · · · ∩ An = {x : x ∈ A1
and x ∈ A2 and . . . and x ∈ An}
= {x : x belongs to each set Ar, for r
= 1, 2, . . . , n}.
• Their union is:
= A1 ∪ A2 ∪ · · · ∪ An = {x : x ∈ A1
or x ∈ A2 or . . . or x ∈ An}
= {x : x belongs to at least one set
Ar , r = 1, . . . , n}.
• Complement: given a set A its complement AI
orAc are all the elements that are in the
universal set which do not belong to A
– If A = {x : P(x)} then .Ac = {x : ¬ P(x)}.
