Purpose

 Normal operation produces heat that must be

carried away by coolant
 Modern cooling systems are designed to
maintain an even temperature of about 82 to
113°C.
 System design removes 35% of total heat.

Cooling System Operation
Classification of cooling system
1] Air cooling
2] water / liquid cooling
 UNDER COOLING.
 OVER COOLING.
Under cooling: Increase in engine temperature, effects lubrication
Over cooling: Decrease in engine temperature, effects viscosity,
Increase in engine emission like HC

Water Pumps
 Centrifugal Type Water Pump.
 Inlet comes from bottom of Radiator.
 Outlet is through impeller to engine.
Radiator

1.Allows for heat to move from coolant to the outside air.

2.Cooler air flowing through the radiator cools the coolant.
3.Most radiators about 28-35 sq. feet.
4.Can have multiple cores to increase area.
Pressure Cap
Thermostat

1.Speeds up engine warm up.

2.Regulates flow and temperature of engine
coolant.
3.Maintains optimum engine operating
temperature for best emissions and economy.
Thermostat
Thermostat

 When the
thermostat is
closed, coolant
is directed back
into the block
through the
bypass passage.
Water Jackets
Coolant Flow
 Some manufacturers position the thermostat on
the inlet side of the water pump.
 As the cooled coolant hits the thermostat, the
thermostat closes until the coolant temperature
again causes it to open.
 This reduces thermal cycling (expanding and
contracting of the metal).
 Thermal cycling can damage aluminum engine
components.
Liquid cooling system
Liquid coolants are Ethylene glycol, glycerin.

Air cooling
 Air cooled system is generally used in small
engines.
 In this system fins or extended surfaces are
provided on the cylinder walls, cylinder head,
etc.
 Heat generated due to combustion in the engine
cylinder will be conducted to the fins and when
the air flows over the fins, heat will be dissipated
to air.
Air cooling
 The amount of heat dissipated to air
depends upon :
(a) Amount of air flowing over the fins.
(b) Fin surface area.
(c) Thermal conductivity of metal used for
fins
