Conflict is the problem or issue in the story.

Conflict creates tension in the story and makes


the story more interesting.
Internal conflict is when the character faces
struggles within themselves. Anxiety, fear,
and mental health would be considered
internal conflict.
External conflict is when the character faces
struggles with an opposing outside force such
as another character, society, or natural
disasters
Jose had a heated argument
Jane dealt with a crippling with his father.

The character's struggle or problem comes from within
themselves. Person vs. Self is an internal conflict.

Diana couldn't determine the right choice. The


scenario played over and over in her mind.
The character's problem comes from a disagreement, argument,
or power struggle with another character. Person vs. Person is an
external conflict.

Prince Loudes knew the throne belonged to him- if he could


only get rid of his pesky older brother.
The character's struggle comes from a force of nature.
The character is in opposition with something
destructive in nature. Person vs. Nature is an external
conflict.

Matika felt frozen to the bone. The treacherous


blizzard had arrived and there was no way out.
The character is in opposition with a group of people,
government, cultural traditions, or societal norms.
Person vs. society is an external conflict.

Darcy's family had arranged for her to be


married - however, Darcy wasn't interested in
an arranged marriage.
Just like characters in books or movies, everyone faces
some kind of conflict in real life, too. While your
conflict might not be about becoming a king or queen,
think about whether or not your main conflict is
internal or external. Then, identify which type of
conflict your real life conflict most likely relates to.

John knew he needed to rebel against the tyrannical
leader and his army. He was sick and tired of the high
