META NON-METAL
UNIT 6
METAL AND IT’S PROPERTIES

Properties Characters FACTS

• Shiny -> when freshly cut or
• Metals are strong and polished • Metals are good conductors of
tough • Malleable -> can be heat
• They do not shatter hammered into shape • Some of them are magnetic
when dropped and do • Ductile -> can be drawn out • Do not melt easily (high
not crack easily into wires melting point and high boiling
• They can hold large • Sonorous -> can make a points)
weighs without ringing sound when they are • Merury is the only metal that is
breaking hit liquid at room temperature
NOTES
• The surface of most metals will become dull after
a while
• Big lumps of metal are hard to test for flexibility
• Bottles and cups also make a “ringing” sound
when they are hit, but they are not made of metal
NON-METALS
Properties shared by many non-
Properties The Uses
metals
• Brittle -> Breaks • Non-metals are not as • Sulfur is added to to
easily hardwearing as rubber to make it hard
• Do not conduct heat metals • Pure oxygen used in
energy well • Many non-metals are hospitals for people
• Most of the do not gasses with breathing
conduct electricity • Non-metals that are difficulties
(insulators) not gasses have low • Chlorin isused to kill
melting point and low bacteria
boiling point
Comparing Metals and Non-Metals

Metals Non-Metals
• Most are solid at room • Many are gasses at room
temperature temperature
• They are shiny • They are dull
• They do not shatter • They are brittle
• They conduct heat • They do not conduct
energy well heat energy well
• They conduct electricity • Most do not conduct
• They are malleable electricity
• Theya are ductile
• They make a ringing
sound when hit
Problems to discuss
Problem 1
• Why are gold and silver used for
jewellery?

Problem 2
• Which maerial is more useful for our
daily life, metals or non-metals?

Problem 3
• To build a house, what are the material we
should choose and give your opinion about
it?
