TASK 2

e-Portfolio 2
Several Filipino
Scientist
Their contributions in the
field of science
Ramon Cabanas Barba
Forty years ago, Filipino
horticulturalist, Dr.
Ramon Barba
developed a simple
method for inducing
early flowering in
mango plants. His
invention, widely used
today, revolutionized the
Philippines mango
industry, making the
Ramon Cabanas Barba
crop one of the country’s
top export earners. His
inspiration to study in this
field came from his
grandfather, Juan Cabanas,
who was then an official of
the Bureau of Plants (BPI)
and Dr. L.G. Gonzales who
is considered as the father
of horticulture in the
Philippines.
Lourdes Jansuy Cruz
Lourdes Cruz is
recognized for her
contributions to the
biochemistry of
conotoxins. Using the
venom from Conus marine
snails, her work on
biologically active
peptides contributed as
biochemical probes for
examining the activities of
the brain.
Lourdes Jansuy Cruz
She grow up with nature
and developed an interest
since childhood. Also,
despite biochemistry
being her worst science
class in college, she
pursued it because she
was possessed by
passion.
Josefino Casas Comiso
Josefino Comiso is a
Filipino physicist working at
the NASA Goddard Space
Flight Center studying global
warming in the Arctic. He
was the first person to
discover a recurring polynya
in the Cosmonaut Sea,
south of the Indian Ocean. A
polynya is a semipermanent
area of open water in sea
ice.
Josefino Casas Comiso
Comiso initially wanted to
be a doctor of medicine, but
was involved in a car
accident as a youth and
broke his femur. His
education was interrupted
for two years, and when he
returned, a subsequent
aptitude test helped point
him toward mathematics
and physics as a career.
Fabian Millar Dayrit
He established the National
Chemistry Instrumentation
Center (NCIC) when the first
high field Fourier transform-
Nuclear Magnetic
Resonance (NMR)
spectrometer (MS) in the
country were obtained in
1994 under the Engineering
and Science Education
Program (ESEP).
Fabian Millar Dayrit
Early on, Dr. Dayrit knew
he was going to pursue
science studies for college,
he took Chemistry at the
Ateneo de Manila University.
Jose Bejar Cruz, Jr.
Jose B. Cruz, Jr. is
recognized for pioneering
and established theories,
principles, analysis tools,
and design methodologies in
complex systems with
dynamic feedback
mechanisms. His works
focuses on sensitivity
analysis and on multi-agent
based modelling for
decentralization and control
Jose Bejar Cruz, Jr.
in large systems or
networks. Dr. Cruz has done
important contributions to
the biochemistry of toxic
peptides from the venom of
Fish-Hunting Conus Marine
Snails.
Mari-Jo Panganiban Ruiz
Dr. Mari-Jo Ruiz is known
locally and internationally as
an expert in graph theory
and operations research,
and her expertise is valued
not only in the academe but
in different industries and
sectors as well. She chose
academia over a competing
job offer from industry
because at the time it paid
slightly better.
Rafael Dineros Guerero III
He was recognized because
of his scientific and technical
contributions to the growth
of Sex Reversal and
Hatchery Techniques that
help the commercial
fabrication of high yielding
market-size tilapia in the
Philippines and other
nations.
Rafael Dineros Guerero III
He observed that one of the
most prominent problems in
tilapia culture is over
population. When he took
his doctorate degree in
Auburn University in the
early 1970s , he focused his
dissertation on the
production of monosex
tilapia into male using
synthetic amdrogens.
Lilian Formalejo Pateña
Lilian Pateña is a Filipino
Scientist who discovered a
breed of calamansi and
seedless pomelo and
discovered microprogation
which established the
banana industry in the
Philippines. She is also an
inventor of leaf-bud cutting
in cassava.
Lilian Formalejo Pateña
She is also the recipient of
the Women of Distinction for
Science and Technology in
1995. Also well known for
doing research on
biotechnology.
Gregory Ligot Tangonan
Is a Filipino inventor of
analogy messaging in the in
sending messages using
Fiber Optics and
Digitalization for its
processing. An aunt, Gloria
Ligot Escano, invited Greg
to study at the University of
San Carlos in Cebu City,
Philippines to take up
Physics.
Enrique Mapua Ostrea, Jr.
Ostrea was recognized for
his significant contributions
in the field of pediatrics,
specifically in neonatal
hyperbilirubinemia, neonatal
drug addiction and his
pioneering work on the
detection of fatal exposure
to drugs, tobacco smoke,
alcohol and environmental
toxicants by analysis of
meconium.
Enrique Mapua Ostrea, Jr.
He was educated up to the
University level in his home
country. By the year 1965,
he was awarded his Medical
Degree from the College of
Medicine at the University of
the Philippines where he
specialized in the fields of
Pediatrics.
Knowing Filipino scientists is really
inspiring for students like us. Let’s study
hard and help develop and expand
science.
