ENERGY CONSERVATION IN
LIGHTING AND POWER
Why conservation?
no simple & cost effective technology for storing
electricity
demand & supply have to match instant to instant
best engineering practices, in an end user’s
perspective, hence lead to the path of Energy
Conservation and Energy Efficient technologies
What is Conservation ?

Energy conservation means using energy

efficiently without sacrifice, discomfort,
reduction in economic activity.
 Energy conservation is not only cheap and clean
but can also be relatively quick and easy to carry
out
ENERGY CONSERVATION
• Energy saved is energy generated
• Reduction in pollution
(Steam plant emissions – CO, CO2 , SO2 , NOx , etc.
“ Energy security rests on two principles. The first, to use the
least amount of energy to provide services and cut down
energy losses. The second, to secure access to all sources of
energy……”
-- APJ Abdul Kalam
Govt. Regulations
• Energy conservation act 2001
• Established statutory authority – Bureau of
Energy Efficiency (BEE) to formulate Energy
Conservation Standards For Equipment and
Appliances which consume, generate, transmit
or supply energy
T12
• Average Watts: 40
• Average Lifespan: 12,000 hours
• Base: Medium Bi-Pin
• Average Lumens: 2520
• Color Rendering Index (CRI): 62
T8
• Average Watts: 32
• Average Lifespan: 24,000 hours
• Base: Medium Bi-Pin
• Average Lumens: 2600
• Color Rendering Index (CRI): 85
T5
• Average Watts: 28 (HO (High Output): 25)
• Average Lifespan: 10,000 hours (HO: 20,000)
• Base: Miniature Bi-Pin
• Average Lumens: 2900 (HO: 5000)
• Color Rendering Index (CRI): 85
EC measures in lighting.
• Switch off unwanted lights
• Use Natural lighting wherever possible
• Use FTL or CFL in Place of Tungsten Lamps
• Use 36W Slim Tubes
• Use Electronic Ballast instead of Induction Type
• Use High Efficiency T5 (28W) FTL
• Use LED lamps for higher efficiency.
• Clean Luminaires regularly
• Power Rating of “Zero watt” bulb – 15 to 28W !!
• Give light shades for Rooms
ENERGY STAR RATING
• The Objectives of Standards & Labeling Program is to provide the
consumer an informed choice about the energy saving and thereby the
cost saving potential of the marketed household and other equipment.
This is expected to impact the energy savings in the medium and long
run while at the same time it will position domestic industry to
compete in such markets where norms for energy efficiency are
mandatory...
• Each appliance gets between one and five stars, with
five stars meaning that it's extremely efficient and is likely to
keep your electricity bills in check. These star labels are issued
by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), which is
an Indian government agency that falls under the Ministry of
Power.
