ABSTRACT
This study addresses a significant research gap by investigating the perceptions
surrounding the utilization of standard marine communication phrases among
international apprentices. Through an exploration of their experiences and perspectives,
we aim to identify key insights into the challenges and effectiveness of employing these
phrases in maritime communication contexts.

This study used a descriptive survey method, this study engaged a sample of
60 respondents, including 30 deck apprentices and 30 engine apprentices. Data
collection involved the distribution of a Likert scale questionnaire via simple
random sampling. Analysis was conducted utilizing mean and
interpretation to determine the perception of both
Deck and Engine Apprentices.
ABSTRACT

The analysis found that there is no a significant difference between the perception of
the respondents and their utilization on Standard Marine Communication Phrases on
board.

Recommendations

Based on the findings and conclusions, the following are recommended:

1. To the Academe, to further continue to emphasize the teaching

and integration of Standard Marine Communication Phrases
(SMCP) into maritime education curriculum. This should
include both theoretical understanding and practical application,
ensuring that future maritime professionals are proficient in
using SMCP effectively. Furthermore, research initiatives within
the Academe should focus on continually updating and refining
SMCP to reflect evolving communication needs and technological
advancements in the maritime industry.
2. To the Standard Marine Communication Phrases Authorities, should collaborate with
educational institutions to develop standardized training materials and resources for
teaching SMCP. This could involve creating interactive learning modules, providing access
to simulated communication scenarios, and offering certification programs to validate
proficiency in SMCP usage. Additionally, SMCP authorities should actively engage with
industry stakeholders to gather feedback and identify areas for improvement or expansion
of SMCP.

3. To the Future researchers, Conduct comprehensive research on Standard Marine

Communication Phrases (SMCP) by increasing the number of respondents, particularly
among experienced seafarers actively working on international vessels, to ensure a robust
sample size. Incorporate mixed-method approaches to gather qualitative and quantitative
data on SMCP usage and effectiveness. Extend research efforts beyond apprenticeship
programs to include seasoned seafarers with extensive practical experience, investigating
how SMCP proficiency evolves over time. By engaging with a broader spectrum of
seafaring professionals, researchers can capture a more nuanced understanding of SMCP's
impact on communication dynamics and safety outcomes in the maritime industry.
