Objectives
• Realization of teaching as a principled profession
• Appreciating “the child” as a the core business of the teacher
• Deep appreciation and application of learner centeredness as the main
approach towards progressive learning and internalization
• Embracing and practicing the mutual relationship in learner-teacher
interactions
Introduction- Teaching as a profession

• Mainly concerned with the preparation of an individual for citizenship


• Teacher guided by a set of moral principles to enable him/her to
transform a pupil into a citizen.
• Becoming a teacher obliges one to a particular way of conduct and
professional character
• In a nutshell, a teacher is -
“A civil instrument in action”
Professional virtues of a teacher
This refers to qualities and merits expected of a teacher
• Honesty
• Decency:- composure, dress code, social affiliations and many more
• Justice, fairness and impartiality
• Devotion to work
• Commitment
• Respect and good repute – and many more

• The teacher should value the worth and dignity of every individual
learner and should therefore give all learners equal opportunities
• Should afford each learner freedom to learn and guarantee equal
opportunities for all.
• The teacher's professional concern is the development of the
learner’s potentials and the learner's general wellbeing.
• Teacher should afford equal opportunities to all leaners and should
not unreasonably restrain them from independent learning.

• For the benefit of the learner, the teacher should strive hard for
professional growth in order to develop exercise the best professional
judgment and integrity.
• Shall not expose the learner to unnecessary embarrassment and ridicule.
• Should not intentionally violate/ deny learners’ their legal rights
• Should not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, sexual
orientation age nationality/ ethnic origin, political affiliation, marital
status, handicapping conditions and social and family back-ground
• Should not exploit a relationship with q student for personal game or
advantage

• Shall keep in confidence personality identifiable information obtained
in the course of professional service, unless disclosure servers a
professional purpose
• Teacher should ensure physical health and safety of the learner from
all conditions harmful to learning situations as well as protection from
harassment and discrimination
Teacher within the society
• Teacher exists within a broad society comprising:-
• colleagues,
• learners,
• learners’ parents
• and other members of the community.
• Consequently the teacher ought to achieve and maintain the highest
degree of moral/ ethical conduct.
• Shall not use institutional privilege for personal gain/ advantage
• Shall not accept any form of gratuity, gifts or favors that might influence
professional judgment and shall not offer such to obtain special advantage
Obligations to the profession of teaching
• Maintenance of honesty in all professional dealings
• Not to interfere with colleague’s exercise of political or civil rights and
responsibilities
• Not to make malicious or intentional false statements about a
colleague
• Shall not misrepresent one’s own professional qualifications
