OPERATING SYSTEM INTERFACE
• There are two types of interface
1.CUI(Character User Interface)
2.GUI(Graphical User Interface)

 Character User Interface: Users interact with
computer using some specific
commands.Every operating system that
provides character user interface has a set of
commands. Users are required to learn those
commands in order to operate the computer
This o.s is difficult to learn and operate as
user has to learn a large number of
commands.For ex. MS Dos and Unix.

 Graphical User Interface:”A picture is worth
a thousand explanation”.GUI operating
system are easy to learn and operate, as
users interact with computer by using
graphical objects like icons, pointers,
buttons, popup menus and other controls.
The screen of a GUI based operating system
is called “Desktop”.

INTRODUCTION
 Windows is a personal computer operating
system from Microsoft , with some common
business applications such as Microsoft Word
and Excel has become a de facto “standard”
for individuals in most corporations and
homes.

HISTORY OF WINDOWS
 The first independent version of Microsoft Windows, version
1.0 was released on 20 November 1985. It was originally going
to
be called "Interface Manager" .
 Microsoft Windows scored a significant success with Windows 3.0,
released in May 1990. . The introduction of virtual memory, improved
graphics, and the ability to multitask helped propel Windows to sell
10 million copies.
 As consumer computers became more widespread, Windows 98
included improved hardware and hardware drivers, Internet Explorer,
and eventually, Internet connection sharing. Released in 1998, with a
new release in 1999, Microsoft 98 was the first release designed
specifically for consumers, as opposed to the business or technology
set.
 Windows 2000: Windows 2000 made everyone's lives easier by
increasing the number of plug and play devices compatible with
the operating system

 Windows XP: The system designed for ease and stability, Windows
XP was released in 2001, offering plenty of ease and functionality
for laptop and desktop users. The operating system was designed
to offer users help through a comprehensive help center, and it
gave users the ability to consume a number of different types of
media
 Windows 7: For this current release of Windows, Microsoft learned
its mistakes with Vista and created an operating system with
speed, stability and minimal system requirements. Microsoft
ditched the gadget bar from Vista, replacing it with a cleaner feel.
 Windows 8: This latest Windows release is getting a lot of
attention.
It also comes with integrated antivirus protection, a virtual hard
disk and a new platform based on HTML5 and JavaScript. It
promises faster boot time, touchscreen compatibility and the
ability to create a bootable USB flash drive.

 Windows 10 is a major release of Microsoft's Windows
NT operating system. It is the direct successor to Windows
8.1, which was released nearly two years earlier. It
was released to manufacturing on July 15, 2015, and later to
retail on July 29, 2015. Windows 10 receives new builds on an
ongoing basis, which are available at no additional cost to
users, in addition to additional test builds of Windows 10,
which are available to Windows Insiders.

THE WINDOWS XP DESKTOP
 Desktop
 Windows present a colorful screen when the
computer is booted.
 First screen that appears on the screen when
computer is ready to operate.
 A workspace for projects and tools
 Uses default settings when the computer is first
started
 Default settings: settings preset by the operating
system
 Appearance can be changed by the user

 Windows XP desktop uses a graphical user
interface
 Graphical user interface (GUI)
 Displays icons to represent items stored on the
computer
 Icons: Pictures of familiar objects

WINDOW AND TYPES
 A window is a rectangular block belonging to
a dialog box or an application.
 Application window: It is a rectangular
area that contains an application.For
example, when you open paintbrush from
start-Programs-Accessories-Paint,
it is opened in an application window.
 The Application window that is currently
receiving user input is called Active window.

 Title Bar: It is a horizontal bar on the top of
a window.It displays the title of a window.
 Menu Bar:It contains different menu with
different options to perform different
commands.A drop down list of options is
displayed when you click on a menu item.
 Toolbar:Horizontal bar with various command
buttons.These buttons provide shortcut to
access commonly used menu commands.
 Minimize Button: First out of three buttons
displayed on the right end of title bar.On
clicking this button, the current window is
deactivated and placed on the taskbar.

 Restore button:On clicking this button, the
size of current window is restored(reduced)
from maximum state and maximized from
reduced state.
 Close button:Closes the current
window.Shortcut key for this command is
Alt+F4
 Status Bar:Displayed at the bottom of the
window.It provides additional details about
window.
 Scroll Bars:Displayed on the right as well as
bottom end of the screen.These bars displays
the content of the current window when the
size of window is small and contents are
more.

DIALOG WINDOW
 Displayed to take some specific input from
user through dialog box.
 They are needed for several commands in
windows.
 For ex, a dialog box is use to specify various
options with print command.

 Wallpaper: It is a large graphic file that spreads
over entire screen of your monitor. Windows
enables you to change your desktop wallpaper
according to your choice.
 Taskbar: It is a horizontal bar situated at the
bottom of windows desktop. It enables you to
manage multiple applications which are running
simultaneously.
 Start Button: It is a small button present on the
left side of taskbar. You can click it to display a
popup menu that contain many options like
programs,documents,settings,help,run and
shutdown.

The start menu of windows xp has a dynamic
icon area.This area lists the shortcuts to
frequently used applications.Windows
automatically changes the contents of this
area depending on the applications used by
the user.

 All Programs: Displays a list of programs or
applications installed on your computer.This
list may vary from one to other computer
depending on the number of software
installed.
 My Recent documents: Displays a list of last
15 accessed files.This provides an easy
access to frequently used files.
 Control Panel: It contain options to define or
change settings of windows based
computer.You can add or remove
programs,add or remove hardware, change
appearance etc. through control panel.

 Search:The search utility enables you to
search for a particular file or a group of files
stored in a secondary storage device.It has
various options to search for different types
of files in windows.
 Help and support:This option takes you to
complete online help for the users. We can
search the help database to find answers to
our queries about working in windows,
different application, utilities and
troubleshooting devices etc.

 Provides on-screen information about programs
 Available by
 Clicking the Start button and selecting Help and
Support from the Start menu

 Run:This enables us to run a particular
application from its associated executable
file.For example if you type “WINWORD” in
the run dialog box and click “OK”.MS word
will be started.This is because winword.exe
is a name of executable file required to run
Ms word.

 Standby option put your computer on standby
mode. This mode is used when the computer
is idle.In this mode, the monitor and hard
disks are powered off and computer consumes
less power.On pressing a key from keyboard or
moving a mouse, the computer switches back
to normal mode.
 Shutdown option will turnoff your computer.
 Restart option will restart after shutting
down.
 Log Off option enables you to login with other
username and password.
