What is
Cities?
4
• Cities remain full of
social tensions. But
perhaps one key
difference pointed out
elsewhere in the series
(Massey, Allen and Pile,
1999).

What is the first City in the World?

Why do People move
in Cities?
➢ Up to the Industrial Revolution people all over the world
lived mainly in the countryside. In 1800, only 3 % of the world’s
population lived in cities. In 1900 only 12 cities had more than 1
million people.
➢ Today, about half of the world’s population lives in urban areas.
There are over 400 cities with more than a million people.
In developed countries, up to 70 % or more live in larger
cities, whereas in poorer countries this rate is below 40 %.

How to diagnose
connectivity?
➢ People connectivity — this exists
where a place promotes social
interaction and community
engagement; where there is a
sense of place, identity,
community attachment and social
diversity; and where people from
all walks of life come into everyday
contact with each other. This
builds social capital and empathy
across the social-cultural
spectrum.
