Activity 01 INTRODUC TION INTRODUCTION GREETINGS! I AM JANELLE G. TURLA, AND I WILL BE PRESENTING MY RESEARCH ON THE APPLICATIONS OF BIOTECHNOLOGY IN 02 OVERVIEW OF BIOTECHN 02 : OVERVIEW OF BIOTECHNOLOGY BIOTECHNOLO - GY is a field of study called that uses living things to create new products. Karl Ereky is known by some as the founder of biotechnology. He coined the term "biotechnology" for the first time in 1919. In addition, he is a Hungarian agricultural engineer. 03 APPLICATIONS OF BIOTECHNOLO GENE THERAPY The process of changing a person's genes to treat or prevent disease is known as gene therapy. Germline gene therapy is used for reproductive cells, whereas somatic gene therapy is used for non-reproductive cells. A rare genetic condition was successfully treated in 1990 by the first successful gene therapy trial. VACCINE A vaccination is a preparation that stimulates the immune system to identify and combat diseases by exposing the body to microorganisms that are inactive or weak in order to initiate an attack. In May 1796, Dr. Edward Jenner produced the first effective vaccination in history. PROS • Better Farming: Enhanced techniques to increase productivity. • Resource efficiency: The more economical and sustainable use of natural resources in industry. • Extended Product Life: Modern biotechnology extends the life of products. CONS of Biotechnology • Dependence on Technology: An overreliance on biotechnology may lead to the extinction of biodiversity and traditional agricultural methods. • Health Risks: There are concerns about how eating genetically modified foods may affect one's health in the long run. • Environmental Concerns: Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have the potential to disrupt ecosystems, introduce resistant pests, and spread genes. ACTIVITY TIME! TRUE or FALSE 1.Biotechnology is the branch of study that examines the history, composition, and physical characteristics of the earth. 2.
