BACK
A. Determine whether the following represents an arithmetic,
geometric, harmonic, Fibonacci sequence or not.

(a.) 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 Arithmetic
(b.) 2, 4, 9, 16, 25 not
(c.) ¼ , 1/16, 1/64, 1/256 Geometric
(d.) 1/3, 2/9, 3/27, 4/81 not
(e.) 1/5, 1/9, 1/13, 1/17, 1/21 Harmonic
(f.) 4, 6, 10, 16, 26… Fibonacci
(g.) 0.1, 0.01, 0.001, 0.0001… Geometric
Arithmetic sequence:
- Is a sequence in which each term after the first is
obtained by adding a constant (called the common
difference) to the preceding term.
nth term:
an = a1 + (n – 1)d
Sum of the terms:
𝑛 ( 𝑎1 + 𝑎2 )
𝑆 𝑛=
2
𝑛 [ 2 𝑎1 + ( 𝑛 − 1 ) 𝑑 ]
𝑆 𝑛=
2
GEOMETRIC SEQUENCE:

- is a sequence in which each term after the first is

obtained by multiplying the preceding term by a
constant (called the common ratio).

nth term: 𝑛− 1
𝑎 𝑛 =𝑎 1 𝑟

{
Sum of the terms: 𝑛 𝑎1 𝑖𝑓 𝑟 =1
𝑆 𝑛= 𝑎 1( 1 − 𝑟 𝑛
)

𝑖𝑓 𝑟 ≠ 1
(1 − 𝑟 )
Sum of infinite geometric
sequence: 𝑎 1
𝑆 𝑛= 𝑖𝑓 − 1<𝑟 <1
1 −𝑟

HARMONIC SEQUENCE:

- is a sequence such that the reciprocals of

the terms form an arithmetic sequence.
Examples:

a.) 1/5, 1/9, 1/13, 1/17, 1/21

b.) -1/42, -1/35, -1/28, -1/21

evaluation HOME

a.) Write the first five terms of the sequence

whose nth term is given by the Ans. 0, 2, 0, 2, 0
formula:
a.) an = {1-(-1)n+1}

b.) List the four terms of the infinite sequence

whose nth term is given by:
Ans. -4, 1, 0, 1
b.) Cn = (-1)n (n-3)2
c.) Find the 9th term and the 21st term of the
sequence whose nth term is:
