Case Study For HDPE Piping

This document presents a case study for analyzing HDPE piping using the START PROF software. It details the challenge of calculating thickness, sizing, axial expansion, and allowable stress for an HDPE pipe according to GOST 32388 code. The document outlines the START PROF model inputs, load cases considered, step-by-step analysis procedure, and concludes that the manual calculations match the software results.

CHALLENGE :
 The objective of the analysis is to calculate thickness calculation,Pipe sizing,Axial Expansion
And Allowable stress for HDPE piping as per GOST 32388 code using HDPE module in START
PROF software

CHALLENGE :

􀀏 􀀷􀁆􀀍􀀖 􀀏 􀀌􀀖􀀷􀁘􀀍􀀖
START PROF MODEL :
Input given:
Design code - GOST 32388 Plasting piping
pipe OD - 280 mm
wall thickness - 17.27 mm
material - PE 80
Tempreture - 40 C
Pressure - 5 Bar
Service life - 25 years
Ambiant temp - 0C

Load cases considered for analysis

STEP BY STEP PROCEDURE :

1. Open the project settings

select the ANALYSIS code

enter service life

2. Create the piping input
SOLUTION :

pipe min wall thickness calculation:

Smin = p x Da/20 x σzul+ p

= 5 x 280/20 x3.71 + 5
= 17.7 mm

More accurate value of

allowable stress is
5.945*0.8/1.25=3.805 N/mm2
σzul = 5.8 x 0.8/( 1 x 1 x 1.25)
= 3.71 N/mm2
Hence the design is safe
SOLUTION :

So According to SIMONA Engineering manual the required thickness is 16.6 mm which is

incorrect and START PROF will show the pipe thickness fail.
From SIMONA Engineering diagram in sec 2.1 for 25 Years of
service life and operating temperature Tope=40 Deg the Equivalent
stress is 6 N/mm2 from this permissible Hoop stress is calculated to
be
σh = 5.8/(1 x 1 x 1.25) = 4.64 N/mm2
permissible Longitudinal stress is less by joint factor
σh = 5.8x 0.8/(1 x 1 x 1.25) = 3.7 N/mm2
SOLUTION :

ε1 = k x α x ∆T = 1 x 0.00022 x 40=0.0088 mm
ε1 = ∆L/L
∆L = 0.0088 x 5000 = 44.05 mm

ε2 = 0.5 x(1- 2x 0.5)/177.5 x ((280/(280-2x17.7)2-1)

=0
ε3= 0

Total Axial expansion of the thermo plastic pipe = 44.05 mm

CONCLUSION :
Analysis of HDPE pipe is completed.Parameters like wall thickness calculation,Allowable stress And axial thermal
expansion of pipe was calculated manually and compared with the results from simulation. And concluded that
manual calculation exactly matches with software results.
