WHAT IS GRAPH?
• Graphs are a visual representation of data and are important tools for understanding the world
around you. They make it easier to grasp complex information by showing trends and
individual events in stock prices, sales figures or even traffic patterns. Understanding how to
read graphs can help you gain the skills to take the next step in your career. In this article, we
discuss what reading graphs entails, explain how to read them and list the different types of
graphs and their importance.
USES OF GRAPHS
• You can use graphs for many purposes, including:
• Showing a company's performance against its competitors: You can use a graph to
determine how much a company has made compared to another in the industry. A graph can
help a business decide whether it's worth investing more or changing its strategy for success.
• Showing trends in sales: A graph can show the impact your marketing strategies have had
on sales figures by enabling you to compare current performance with that seen in previous
years. It may also highlight seasonal trends that may affect sales figures during certain
months due to holidays or special events, such as Christmas.
• Comparing the values of different variables: If you have data points containing two
different variables, graphing them allows you to compare these data points directly. This
action may be more challenging if you could only compare them as two lists of values side by
side.
• Seeing patterns in data: Using graphs helps you to see patterns in data, which might not be
apparent when observing individual data points or when the data is in a table.
TYPES OF GRAPHS
• There are different types of graphs that you can use to represent your data.
These include:
• Bar graph
A bar graph is a simple graphic that displays data. Presenters often use bar graphs
to compare data sets or track data trends over time.
Bar graphs represent numerical data with rectangles or columns, representing a
number of observations.
The two sides of a bar graph are axes.
Each axis shows a different
measure for data, which helps to compare
sets of data easily in a bar graph.
• Line graph
A line graph is a type of chart that displays how the value of an item
changes over time. Line graphs, also known as line charts, can have multiple lines
on the same axis, which readers typically compare to one another. For example,
you can create a line graph showing the difference in profits that each department
makes in a company. Each department can have its own line with its own color, and
a legend on the graph can explain which colors correspond to which lines.
WHAT IS TABLE?
• Tables present lists of numbers or text in columns and can be used to synthesize existing
literature, to explain variables, or to present the wording of survey questions. They are also
used to make a paper or article more readable by removing numeric or listed data from the
text. Tables are typically used to present raw data, not when you want to show a relationship
between variables.
• Tables should be:
• Centered on the page.
• Numbered in the order they appear in the text.
• Referenced in the order they appear in the text.
• Labeled with the table number and descriptive title above the table.
• Labeled with column and/or row labels that describe the data, including units of measurement.
• Set apart from the text itself; text does not flow around the table.

WHAT IS MAP?
• Mapping in writing is a set of really handy techniques that help children to organise their
thoughts early on in the writing process. Mapping is a more general term that includes
strategies like mind mapping, listing, brainstorming and others too. There are various
techniques that children can use like concept maps, flowcharts and lists of pros and cons.
Through bringing mapping in writing into your lessons, you’ll have an insight into each child’s
individual writing process and they’ll be able to better organise their ideas before beginning to
write.
KEY FEATURES OF MAPPING IN
WRITING
• Mapping in writing as a technique can be really useful for certain learning styles, subjects and
tasks in school. Here are some of the key features of this prewriting method that might help
you identify when and how it could be beneficial.
• Shows cause and effect and creates helpful links between pieces of information.
• Succinctly summarises ideas.
• Provides a guideline to write from later on.
• Gives space to flesh out ideas and experiment with them.
• There are a variety of ways and methods you can use to map your writing. These are a few
options of techniques that really help to organise your thoughts in this prewriting process.
• Mind map: This is probably the most widely used method of mapping in writing. It involves
identifying a topic to think about in the centre and then branching ideas out to the sides. It’s a
really simple way to visually get to grips with your ideas about a topic or project!
• Spider Diagram: A very similar method to a mind map but they give you more freedom with
the structure and layout. Take a look at the linked Wiki page all about them to find out more
• Flowcharts: This method is great for seeing how all your ideas connect and work together. It
helps you to see how your piece of writing will flow, so it’s another great way of planning the
structure
