GUIDE QUESTION:
• How do you determine the direction of a permanent magnetic field?
• How does a current-carrying wire create a magnetic field?
“Coil of Wire and Moving Magnet”
Objectives
At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:
Define a magnetic field
Determine the direction of permanent magnetic field
Investigate the influence and effects of the magnetic
field of the Earth
EARTH’S
MAGNETIC FIELD
What is Earth’s Magnetic Field?
Earth’s magnetic field is also referred to as the geomagnetic field.
The earth’s magnetic field extends millions of kilometers into outer space
and looks very much like a bar magnet.
The earth’s south magnetic pole is actually near the North Pole and the
magnetic north pole is in Antarctica
Magnetosphre- Protective Magnetic Bubble
VOCABULARY
Magnetic Domains
-Certain regions of a material that align with the Earth's external magnetic field.
These regions are responsible for the magnetic properties of the material
Magnetic Poles
- The two end of a magnet, known as the north pole and the south pole. Like poles
repel each other, and opposite poles attract each other. Magnetic poles always come
in pairs.
Magnetism
- the force exerted by magnets when they attract or repel each other
BASIC FEATURES OF MAGNETS
Magnets exert force on each other, as well as on certain
metals.
This force is strongest when they are touching, but also acts at
a distance.
Magnets can either attract or repel each other, depending on
how they are held.
Magnetic Compasses
The basic properties of magnets have been known since ancient times, based
on observations of natural lodestones.
The first person to describe a magnetic needle compass was the Chinese
scientist Shen Kuo (1031–1095), who described that when a magnetic
material is freely suspended, it tends to align itself in a north-south direction.
Since magnets line up with each other, this fact led to the reasonable
conclusion that the Earth itself behaves as a magnet.
Why magnetic field is important?
The magnetic field is extremely important to sustaining life on Earth.
Without it, we would be exposed to high amounts of radiation from the Sun
and our atmosphere would be free to leak into space.
This is likely what happened to the atmosphere on Mars. As Mars doesn’t
have flowing liquid metal in its core, it doesn’t produce the same dynamo
effect. This left the planet with a very weak magnetic field, allowing for its
atmosphere to be stripped away by solar winds, leaving it uninhabitable.

If Earth lost its magnetic field, there would be no
magnetosphere-and no line of defense, even from weaker solar
storms. Our power grids would be more vulnerable than ever,
and even our computers and other electronics could suffer
damage if a solar storm struck.
