Memory Unit
The computer’s memory is analogous to our brain’s
memory system. There is a certain portion of our
memory that is permanent and there is a portion that
is temporary memory.

Memory Unit
The permanent memory that we are referring to is
the Read Only Memory (ROM). On the other hand,
the Random Access Memory (RAM) is the temporary
memory.

Memory Unit
Read Only Memory (ROM) – it contains pre-
programmed computer instructions, known as the
Operating System and special data that the computer
uses throughout its processing.

Memory Unit
Random Access Memory (RAM) – it is the temporary
storage area for our programs and data. Information
written in the RAM will only exist while power is
supplied to the computer. (Once you turn off the
power of your computer, the data is lost.)

SIMM
• Single In-Line Memory Module
– EDO RAM (Extended Data Out Random Access
Memory)
– In 1993 one SIMM typically held one or four megabytes, by
early 1997 one could hold 8, 16, 32 MB.

DIMM
Dual In-Line Memory Module
The 8-byte DIMM format dual speed contacts
can accommodate 4- and 16-megabit dynamic
RAM chips, and is predicted to handle 64- and
256-Mbit devices.
• SDRAM
• DDR SDRAM

DIMM
SDRAM (Synchronous Dynamic RAM)
SDRAM has been around for about five years and includes
several versions, differing primarily in bus speed : PC66, PC100
and PC133. The number indicate each type’s speed, as
expressed in Megahertz.

DIMM
DDR SDRAM (Double-Data-Rate SDRAM)
This is an enhanced version of SDRAM that effectively runs at double
the bus speed of conventional SDRAM

RIMM
Rambus In-Line Memory Module
• RDRAM
Developed by Rambus and championed by Intel, is the latest
high speed memory technology. Pentium 4 PCs equipped with the Intel
850 chipset use RDRAM;
Newer Pentium 4 systems based on the Intel 845 chipset can use less
expensive SDRAM or DDR SDRAM.

ASSESSMENT TEST
Essay:
• Conduct online research on the latest computer memory units
sold in the market today.
• In at lease 150 words, write an essay on why do we need to
upgrade computer memory in connection with our work in the
AFP.
