ABSTRACT
• Glass fibers are reinforced polymer composites have been prepared by various
manufacturing technology and are widely used for various applications. Glass
fibers were first manufactured in the 1930s for high temperature electrical
applications. Glass fibers are having excellent properties like high strength ,
flexibility , stiffness and resistance to chemical harm. It may be in the form of
rowing ,chopped strand ,yarns , fabrics and mats. Each type of glass fibers have
unique properties and are used for various applications in the form of polymer
composites.
PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION
• In most of the places plastics have been widely used by human
beings.
• These plastics are non-degradable and the environmental conditions
were affected.
• For this purpose we processed to go for natural fibers (Glass Fiber).
INTRODUCTION

• Glass fiber is a light weight , extremely strong , and robust material.

• Fiber glass combines its light weight with an inherent strength to provide a
weather resistant finish with a variety of surface textures.

• We are using only glass fibers in various models by providing composites.

• Glass fibers are commonly used in automobiles , marine , aerospace industries.

• Epoxy resin and HY996 hardener are used to bond the glass fibers.
FIBER FORMING PROCESS
• Glass melts are made by fusing silica with minerals , which contain the oxides needed
to form a given composition.

• The molten mass is rapidly cooled to prevent crystallization and formed into glass fibers
by a process also know as fiberization.

• The continuous glass fibers are made by a direct draw process and formed by extruding
molten glass through a platinum alloy bushing that may contains up to several thousand
orifices.

• Each orifices are in the range of 0.793mm to 3.17mm in diameter.

S - GLASS FIBERS

• . In this striched glass fiber we are using S-type glass fiber.

• The S-glass refers to the strength whose property shows high strength.

• It comes under special purpose glass fibers which are used for
replacing plastics.

• S-glass fibers are derivatives of the ternary SiO 2-Al2O3-CaO system.

• Glass fiber can be made by fiber glass hand lay-up

RESIN AND HARDENER
• A suitable resin for combining the
corresponding fiber glass with a plastic was
developed in 1936.

• Epoxy resin and HY996 hardener are used as

an bonding agent to stiffen the glass fibers.

• The resin and hardener should be mixed in the

ratio of 10:1 for bonding the glass fibers.
STRICHING PROCESS
• The glass fibers which are in metered format to
be cutted in the squared shape of 30cm by 30cm.

• The fiber pieces are arranged into 4 layers and

are striched in various forms

• Each strich should be spaced into 2cm in the

layered up glass fibers.
VARIOUS TYPES OF STRICHING

• In specimen 1 the square shaped 30cm glass fiber should be marked horizontally
by giving line spacing of 2cm and to be striched on the marked line.

• In specimen 2 it should be marked on both vertically and horizontally in

90degree by providing 2cm line spacing and to be striched.

• In specimen 3 the angle should be in 45degree and to be marked in one direction.

• In specimen 4 the angle to be in 45degree and to marked in both the directions

and then to be striched.
STRICHING

BEFORE STRICHING AFTER STRICHING

LAMINATION PROCESS
• The glass fiber to be pierced into four pieces in the dimensions of
30cm squared shape.

• First the fiber piece to be placed and then resin – hardener mixture to
be pasted along with the next glass fiber.

• Similarly the 4 pieces to be bonded by using the mixture of epoxy

resin and hardener.
LAMINATION ON STRICHED GLASS
FIBER
• The striched glass fibers are to be laminated separately.

• The wax and emery sheet to be provided in the upper and bottom layer
on the striched glass fiber.

• Similarly the striched glass fiber to be laminated in the same

procedure.
