1. Avoid defining with X is when and X is where statements. These

introductory adverb phrases should be avoided

2. Define a noun with a noun, a verb with a verb
and so forth.

3. Do not define a word be mere repetition or merely restating word.

This is called circular definition wherein a word is defined by using

another in its definition.


• [Circular] Rhyming poetry consists of lines that contains
rhymes.
In this example, rhyming poetry is defined using the word
rhyme which is also the same with the word being defined.
This is confusing for readers.
• [ Revised] Rhyming poetry consists of lines that contain
two or more words with similar sounding final syllables

5. Keep the class part of your definition small but adequate.
