INTRODUCTION

Philippines is a basketball nation. It has

become part of every young Filipino who
enjoys the world of sports.
Frazier (1998) mentioned that “basketball
leaves its impression on our lifestyle, our
clothes and our fashion and not just for
young people”. The whole country goes
casual now. Everyone is very casual now and
basketball jerseys, shooting shirts and warm-
up clothes are ubiquitous.

HISTORY OF BASKETBALL
0 2 – H I S T O RY O F B A S K E T B A L L
• Basketball is a fast running game which may be played indoors or
outdoors. It was invented by Dr. James Naismith a Canadian
clergyman, in December, 1981.
• Later, Dr. William G. Morgan , from the Internati onal Young Men's
Associati on Training School in Springfi eld, Massachusett s USA, invented
the sport volleyball.
• Naismith was instructed by his superior, Dr. Luther Gulick to
develop an indoor sport that could be played during winter
months. Dr. Naismith nailed two peach baskets on the walls of
YMCA gymnasium, threw a ball up and thus delivered the initi al
shot for a major sport which later on captured worldwide
interest (NCAA, 1998)
