How to Create an Ethernet Cable

Network Cables
-are used to connect and transfer data
and information between computers,
routers, switches and storage area
networks. These cables are essentially
the carrier or media through which data
flows.

standard.
Ethernet cable jack wiring follows the
T568A and T568B standards.
The only difference between them is how
frequently they are used in a particular
region or type of organization.
Wire Color Coding
When it comes to wiring RJ45 data jacks and
plugs, ANSI, TIA and EIA agree on two wiring
standards: T568A and T568B. While these
standards are very similar and can oftentimes
be chosen according to nothing more than the
installer’s preference, there are a few
significant differences between the two, and
it’s very important to know about these before
you begin to build – or expand – your network.

TIA - Telecommunications Industry Association
EIA - Electronics Industries Alliance
T568B is the standard followed by the majority of
ethernet installations in the United States for Rj-45
color code. It is more common standard used when
cabling for businesses.

T568A is the majority standard followed in European


and Pacific countries. It is also used in all United
States government installations

Materials, Tools and Equipment Needed

1. Cat 5, Cat 5e, Cat 6, or Cat7 cable –is a network


cable that consists of four twisted pairs of copper
wire terminated by an RJ-45 connector
2. RJ-45 connectors – short for Registered Jack-45,
it is an 8-pin connection used for Ethernet network
adapters.
3. Crimping tool – a device used to conjoin two
pieces of metal by deforming one or both of them
to hold each other.
4. Wire stripper – is a tool designed to remove the
protective covering (jacket) from a cable to expose
the inner wires.
CROSSOVER vs. STRAIGHT THROUGH

STRAIGHT THROUGH CABLE

STRAIGHT THROUGH - is used to connect a computer to a router a switch or hub. In the


straight through cable each pin connects to the same pin on the other side. A straight through
cable is used to connect two dissimilar devices.
CROSSOVER vs. STRAIGHT THROUGH

CROSS OVER CABLE

CROSSOVER - is used to connect two computers, two hubs , two routers , etc. In the
crossover cable the wires linking the pins are crisscrossed. A cross over cable is used to
connect two similar devices.

How to Make a Straight Through Cable

-Strip the cable. Strip at least 1 half of an


inch from the cable to expose the inners
wires.
-Separate the wires in the cable so they can
be put into the RJ-45
-Insert the cables into the RJ-45 connector
and crimp using a crimping tool
-Do these steps for each side of the cable
