Bar Graph

This document provides information on how to create simple bar graphs. It defines what a bar graph is, the key parts of a bar graph including titles, axes, scales, and bars. It provides steps for drawing a basic bar graph, including choosing variables for each axis and marking axis scales and bars. An example bar graph showing bank profits over 5 years is included. In conclusion, bar graphs are useful for displaying discrete data visually and allowing comparisons of different data points.

INTRODUCTION
Graphs and charts are great because they

communicate information visually.

For this reason, graphs are often used in

newspapers, magazines and businesses around the world.

Sometimes, complicated information is

difficult to understand and needs an illustration.

Graphs or charts can help impress people by

getting your point across quickly and visually.

The bars can be plotted vertically or

horizontally.
In a vertical bar graph, values of the

independent variable are plotted along a horizontal axis from left to right.
Function values are shown as shaded or colored

vertical bars of equal thickness extending

In a horizontal bar graph, the independent

variable is plotted along a vertical axis from the bottom up.

Values of the function are shown as shaded or

colored horizontal bars of equal thickness extending toward the right, with their left ends vertically aligned.

Steps For drawing a simple bar diagram

Draw two perpendicular lines one horizontally

and the other vertically at an appropriate place of the paper.

Take the basis of classification along

horizontal line (X-axis) and the observed variable along vertical line (Y-axis) or vice versa.

Marks signs of equal breath for each class and

leave equal or not less than half breath in between two classes.

Finally marks the values of the given variable

to prepare required bars.

Example:
Draw simple bar diagram to represent the

profits of a bank for 5 years.

Years 1989 1990 12 1991 18 1992 25 1993 42

Profit 10 (million $)

Parts of a Bar Graph

Graph Title--The graph title gives an

overview of the information being presented in the graph. The title is given at the top of the graph.

Axes and their labels--Each graph has two

axes. The axes labels tell us what information is presented on each axis. One axis represents data groups, the other represents the amounts or frequency of data groups.

Grouped Data Axis--The grouped data axis

is always at the base of the bars. This axis displays the type of data being graphed.

Frequency Data Axis--The frequency axis

has a scale that is a measure of the frequency or amounts of the different data groups.
Axes Scale-- Scale is the range of values

being presented along the frequency axis.

Bars--The bars are rectangular blocks that

can have their base at either vertical axis or horizontal axis (as in this example). Each bar represents the data for one of the data groups.

Conclusion
Bar charts are used for plotting discrete (or

'discontinuous') data which has discrete values.

A bar chart is very useful if you are trying to

record certain information whether it is continuous or not continuous data.

A bar graph uses different sizes and colors of

bars to represent various bits of data.

Even without numbers, it is easy to visually see

differences or trends by looking at the size and/or color of the bar on the graph.

A bar graph can be used to display and compare

data.

The scale should include all the data values and

be easily divided into equal intervals.

They clearly show how one variable is affected as

the other rises or falls.

Given one variable, the value of the other can be

easily determined.
