of computers or other devices
interconnected within a single, limited
area, typically via Ethernet or Wi-Fi.
Subtypes of LAN
Ethernet : The traditional technology for connecting devices in a
wired local area network (LAN).

Wireless LAN : a wireless computer network that links two or

more devices using wireless communication to form a local area
network (LAN) within a limited area such as a home, school,
computer laboratory, campus, or office building.

Token Ring : Token Ring is a computer networking technology

used to build local area networks.
Wide area network

telecommunications network that
extends over a large geographic area.
Wide area networks are often established
with leased telecommunication circuits.
Subtypes of WAN

telephone network is the aggregate of the world's telephone
networks that are operated by national, regional, or local
telephony operators. It provides infrastructure and services for
public telecommunication.
• Integrated Services Digital Network: ISDN or Integrated Services
Digital Network, is a circuit-switched telephone network system that
transmits both data and voice over a digital line.
Types of network throughout the years.
The evolution of networks refers to the development and transformation of various types of networks, such as
communication networks, computer networks, and social networks, over time. Here’s a brief overview of the evolution of
networks:
1. Early Communication Networks
2. Telegraph and Telephone Networks
3. Internet
4. Mobile Networks
5. Computer Networks
6. Social Networks:
7. Internet of Things (IoT)
8. Blockchain Networks
9. 5G and Beyond
The evolution of networks has drastically shaped how information is shared, business is conducted, and people connect
across the world. As technology continues to advance, networks will likely play an even more integral role in our daily
lives.
Intranet

An intranet is a private network that is limited to a specific organization

or group of people. It is designed to facilitate communication,
collaboration, and information sharing among members of the
organization. Unlike the internet, which is a global network accessible
to anyone, an intranet is restricted to authorized users within the
organization and is not accessible to the general public.
Types of Intranet
Employee intranet: An employee intranet is a private, secure network that is
exclusively for the use of an organization’s employees. It serves as an internal
hub for communication and collaboration, allowing employees to easily
connect and share information with one another. Just as your website is the
outside face of your organization and brand, the intranet is the internal
version. It comes packed with exciting modules and tools employees can
utilize to support their work.
• Departmental intranet: A departmental intranet is a private and dedicated
digital platform within an organization that serves the specific needs of a
particular department. It functions as an internal website or portal designed
to enhance communication, collaboration, and information sharing among
the employees within that department.
