Introduction To Series Circuit

A series circuit provides a single path for electrons to flow from one terminal of a voltage source to the other. It is constructed using resistors, a voltage source, conductor, and switch. The total resistance is found by adding the individual resistances, and the total current is calculated using voltage divided by total resistance. Voltage drops across resistors are calculated using current times resistance.

Industrial Techniques
Construction of a basic circuit.
Construction of a series circuit.
The basic parts of a circuit.

 Energy source – produces the force that causes electrons to

move (Voltage). Eg. Battery and electromechanical generators.

 Control device – it is used to open and close a circuit. Eg.

Switches.
 Conductor - provides an easy path through which

electrons can move freely through the circuit.

 Load - changes the energy of moving electrons into

some other useful form of energy. Eg. Light bulb.

Series circuit
A series circuit is an electrical circuit that provides only

one complete path, through which electrons can move

from one terminal of the energy source to the other.

 RT = the total resistance.
Characteristics of a series circuit

series circuit is equal to the
sum of the voltage drops
across all the components in
the circuit.

EXAMPLE

 What is the total resistance in the circuit below? RT = 3kΩ + 10kΩ + 5kΩ = 18kΩ

 What is the total current in the circuit below? IT = VT /RT = 9V / 18kΩ = 0.0005A
 What is the voltage across R2 and R3 in the circuit below?

V2 = IT × R2 = 0.0005 A × 10kΩ = 5V

V3 = IT × R3 = 0.0005 A × 5kΩ = 2.5V
