Peace and all Good!

Just like how the La Salette

message inspires us to
connect with God and each
other, Confirmation does
the same thing. It's like a
supercharge for our faith,
making us stronger and
more connected to the
church family. Let's buckle
up and explore this
sacrament together!
Name
+The name Confirmation comes
from the Latin word "confirmatio"
which mean "a strengthening".

+A sacrament by Christ whereby

the Holy Spirit is given to those
baptized by the imposition of
hands, the anointing with chrism,
and set form of words, in order
that they may boldly profess their
faith in word and deed.
Definition
+Confirmation is the sacrament of
spiritual strengthening through a
special conferral of the Holy Spirit
for those who have already received
spiritual regeneration in Baptism.
Just as, in the order of nature, we
distinguish between birth and
maturity, so also in the supernatural
order there is a difference between
spiritual rebirth (Baptism) and
spiritual growth or maturity
(Confirmation)
Definition
+The sacrament of
confirmation confers a
character. By it the baptized
continue their path of Christian
initiation. They are enriched
with the gift of the Holy Spirit,
and are more closely linked to
the church. They are made
strong and more firmly obliged
by word and deed to witness to
Christ and spread and defend
the faith
Institution
+Going back to the early third
century, the bishops of the
church did impose hands in
order to confer the Holy Spirit
and that rite was distinct from
baptism. On the basis of that
tradition and on the basis of a
few indications in the Bible, the
infallible Church solemnly
teaches that Confirmation is one
of the seven sacraments
instituted by Christ.
Institution
+Christ personally instituted
confirmation can be shown from the
Bible in an indirect way only. The
prophets of the old testament had
foretold the outpouring of the spirit of
God over all mankind as a
characteristic of the messianic age
Jesus is described in the Gospels as the
Spirit-filled prophet who is mighty in
word and deed. He promised his
apostles and all the future faithful that
he would send them the Holy Spirit
after his glorification at the right hand
of he Father.
Effects
+According to Catechism of the Catholic Church (1994), the main
effects of confirmation are to strengthen and confirm the grace of
baptism. This means a more intense sharing in the mission of Christ
and of the church, empowering the confirmed to be public witnesses
of the faith:

A. witness to the kingdom of God and God's power present in

the new age begun in Christ;
B. witness to Jesus the Christ, as the unique savior of all;
C. witness to the freedom from the slavery of sin brought by
God's presence through Christ and the spirit;
D. witness to the loved of God, Father, Risen Incarnate Son,
and Spirit, by loving service of others in the Spirit; and
E. witness to Christ's real presence in the Christian
community, the people of God, the Church (CFC, # 1631).
Effects
+Like baptism which it
completes, confirmation is given
only once, for it too imprints on
the soul an indelible spiritual
mark, the character, which is the
sign that Jesus Christ has marked
a Christian with the seal of his
Spirit by clothing him with
power from on high so that he
may be his witness (CCC, # 1303-
1304).
Effects
+In brief, the sacrament of confirmation is
described by Vatican Il in terms of its two
essential characteristics: closer union with
the church, and strengthening and
empowerment by the Holy Spirit to actively
spread the faith.
+By the sacrament of confirmation, the
faithful are more perfectly bound to the
church and are endowed with the special
strength of the Holy Spirit.
+Hence they are, as true witnesses to Christ,
more strictly obliged to spread the faith by
word and deed

The Celebration of Confirmation
+Based from the Code of canon Law (1983),
the sacrament of confirmation is conferred
by anointing with chrism on the forehead on
a laying on of hands, and by the words
prescribed in the approved liturgical books.

+The chrism to be used in the sacrament of

confirmation must have been consecrated by
a bishop, even when the sacrament is
administered by a priest. It is desirable that
the sacrament of confirmation be celebrated
in a church and indeed during the mass.
The Celebration of Confirmation
+The Bishop/priest uses the
Byzantine formula.

"Be sealed with the gift of the

Holy Spirit."

He adds the name of the

candidates: "N ..., be sealed with
the gift of the holy Spirit.”
Persons to be confirmed
+The Code of Canon Law (1983) also stated
that every baptized person who is not
confirmed, and only such person, is capable
of receiving confirmation.

+The faithful are bound to receive this

sacrament at the proper time.

+Parents and pastors of souls, especially

parish priests, are to see that the faithful are
properly instructed to receive the
sacrament and come to it at the opportune
time.
The Sponsor
+As far as possible the person to be
confirmed is to have a sponsor. The
sponsor's function is to take care
that the person confirmed behaves
as a true witness of Christ and
faithfully fulfills the duties inherent
in this sacrament. A person who
would undertake the office of
sponsor must fulfill the conditions:
mentioned in CL, # 874 (CL, # 892-
893)
