Heat Transfer

Heat transfer occurs between states of matter whenever a temperature difference exists and heat transfer occurs only in the direction of decreasing temperature, from a hot object to a cold object. The three methods of heat transfer are conduction, convection, and radiation. Conduction involves the direct transfer of heat through contact between objects of different temperature. Convection involves the transfer of heat by the mass movement of fluids like liquids and gases between areas of different temperature. Radiation involves the transfer of heat through electromagnetic waves and does not require matter or direct contact.

Group1 Conduction: What will happen when a metal
rod is place in a hot water?
Group2 Convection: Draw a diagram to show the
movement or particles when water was heated. Use
three arrows to represent your diagram.
Group 3 Radiation: This type of energy transfer
travel through space without a medium. Why do you
feel the heat from a fire when you seat near it? And
why does an ice cream melts on a hot day?
Assignment
Directions: In the Venn diagram write the words or phrases that
best describes the types of heat transfer. In the center write the
words or phrase that are common in three topics. Choose your
answer from the box. Draw the Venn diagram and write your
answer on a 1/2 sheet of paper. (20pts)

*Direct contact
*No particles required
*Energy waves
*Vibrate faster when heated
*Transfer heat
*Moves in cycle or circle
