In short, Basic Principle of when electric fields and magnetic fields interact, a DC Motor mechanical force arises. This is the principle on which the DC motors work. Components of a DC Motor The DC motor has armature and field winding. The armature is connected to the DC supply source through commutator segment and carbon brushes. The armature is placed under the magnetic field. The magnetic field is produced in the DC motor when its field winding is energized with DC supply. Working The single loop construction of DC motor is as given Mechanism below. Series DC Motors: High starting torque, used in applications like cranes and locomotives.
Shunt DC Motors: Nearly constant speed, employed
in conveyor belts and industrial processes. Types of DC Compound DC Motors: Combination of series and Motors shunt characteristics, adaptable to different tasks. Application of DC Motor 1. Automotive Industry: Used in electric windows, windshield wipers, and fans.
2. Robotics: Drive robot joints and
mechanisms.
3. Industrial Machinery: Power conveyor
systems and machine tools.
4. Home Appliances: Found in blenders,
mixers, and electric shavers. Advantages of DC Motors 1. DC motor got higher Starting Torque is the best advantages of dc motor 2. Ability to control speed over wide range. 3. No Harmonic effect 4. Ability to Quickly Control the Motors. 5. Dc motor are best for low-cost operation. 6. Less electronics and Rectification Needs 7. Better Speed regulation. Challenges and Limitations 1. DC motors have a high initial cost. 2. Maintenance cost is high and increased operation due to the presence of brushes and commutator. 3. Due to sparking at brush DC motors cannot operate in explosive and hazardous conditions. 4. As the speed increases, the shaft gets vibrated and the armature gets damaged. 5. We need converters to supply power to the motor. Conclusion
