Basic Introduction

What is sensor?

Senor is a device which represents changes in physical environment for the purpose it
has deployed.

ANALOG SENSORS:- DIGITAL SENSORS:-

Analog sensors:-
Analog sensors are used to measure continuous parameters.

Examples of analog parameters are:-

Temperature.

For temperature we use sensors like thermocouple , RTD etc

Pressure:-

For pressure sensing and recording we uses pressure transmitter.

Analog sensors:-

RTD:-
An RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector) is a sensor whose resistance changes as its
temperature changes. The resistance increases as the temperature of the sensor increases.

How to check RTD with multimeter?

Check resistance between white and red wire if it is around 109 to 115 ohm and
check resistance between two red wire if that is below 1 ohm then we can consider
RTD is working ok. Other wise replace it.

Analog sensors:-

Pressure Transmitter:-
Pressure transmitter is a device which senses change in pressure and gives out put as 4 to 20 mA
based on pressure.

How to check PT?

Check mA feed back on CH- through multimeter. At


zero pressure it should give 4mA output.

Digital sensors:-

Digital sensors are used to sense events like presence of material.

Examples of digital sensors are as follows.

1. Photo electric sensors.


2. Proximity sensors
3. Safety scaner etc…

Photo electrica sensor:


Photo electric sensors are changing out put based on reception of infrared lights.

Types of Photo sensors


1. Trough beam
2. Retroreflective
3. Diffuse reflective

How to check working?

When material is present 24V Dc must available at out put lead. Then
sensor is working ok.

Proximity sensor:
Proximity sensors are changing out put based on presense of metal or magnet with in sensing
range.
Types of Photo sensors
1. NO proximity sensor
2. NC proximity sensor
3. Reed switches

How to check working?

NO type:-
If out put 24 v DC is available when material is present at sensor. Than
Sensor is working.
NC type:-
If out put 24v DC is not present when material is present at sensor. Than
Sensor is working.

Safety Devices:-
Safety devices are used to improve
safety of person and machine both.
Types of safety devices are as
follows
1) Safety scanner

2) Safety curtain

With this

4) Safety mate combination. When safety condition violation is detected digital out put state is
changed and trough controller machine is stopped.

Where sensors are used in plant:-
Where it is used in plant:--
1) Photo electric sensors are used mainly used for material present and loop sensor in entire
plant.
2) Proximity switches are used for mainly all over travel protection and to confirm position of
assembly. Examples are tray forward and back position, Homing confirmation, VCL open
close position confirmation etc.
3) In every cylinder position confirmation reed switches are used in entire plant.
4) RTD are used at all heating and temperatre measuring applications. Examples are TCU,
Motor internal temperature sensing, Curing press, Building PA cutter assembly etc..
5) Thermocouples are used at Boiler for sensing bed temperature and at chimny to sense flue
gas temperature. And in mixer during bach mixing process batch temerature is beig sensed
by thermocouple.
6) Pressure transmitters are used at all process where trend provision is required like curing,
utility , building , mixer etc.
