4.2 Converts Normal To Standard

This document discusses converting normal random variables to standard normal variables and vice versa. It defines standard scores (z-scores) as standardized scores where the distribution has a mean of 0 and standard deviation of 1. The formula for calculating z-scores converts raw scores to a number of standard deviations from the mean. Examples are provided to demonstrate calculating z-scores from raw data and converting z-scores back to raw scores using the formula. Practice problems are included for the reader to determine z-scores and convert between raw scores and z-scores.

CONVERSION OF

NORMAL RANDOM
VARIABLES TO
STANDARD NORMAL
VARIABLES AND VICE-
VERSA
 When a frequency distribution is
normally distributed, we can find out
the probability of a score occurring by
standardizing the scores, known as
standard scores (or z scores). The
standard normal distribution simply
converts the group of data in our
frequency distribution such that the
mean is 0 and the standard deviation
is 1.
OF STANDARD DEVIATIONS FROM
THEIR MEANS. RESULTANTLY, THESE Z-
SCORES HAVE A DISTRIBUTION WITH A
MEAN OF 0 AND A STANDARD
DEVIATION OF 1. THE FORMULA FOR
CALCULATING THE STANDARD SCORE
IS GIVEN BELOW:
EXAMPLE
 Given mean = 62 and standard deviation = 8. Find the z-score value
that correspond
A. x= 70
B. x=82
C. x= 42

 Z-scores can also be converted back to their corresponding raw

scores using the formula:
Raw Score (x) = Mean + (z)(SD)

Ex. mean =70 ; sd = 5 ; z = 3

ACTIVITY: (NOTEBOOK)
A. Determine the z-value for each of the following x values
for a normal distribution with mean = 16 and sd = 3.

1. x = 12 2. x = 8 3. x = 25

B. Determine the raw scores of the following. Round to

three decimal places.

4. mean = 85; sd = 5 ; z = 3

ENHANCEMENT ACTIVITY : NOTEBOOK
 A. Given mean = 83 and standard deviation = 12. Find the z-score value that corresponds to each of the following scores up to
two decimal places.
1. X = 70 2. X = 83 3. X =50

 B. Given the same mean and standard deviation in Test A, find the corresponding raw scores of the following z-scores.

4. z = 1.84 5. z = -2.06
