Lesson 1 - Flame Tests and Practical

This document provides instructions for performing flame tests to identify metal ions. It outlines the basic steps: metal ions produce colors when heated in a flame; different metals produce different colors; an unreactive wire is used to introduce a sample into the flame and avoid contamination; only one ion should be present or the colors will mix. It includes a table to record flame colors for lithium, sodium, potassium, calcium, and copper ions. Students are asked to research how to test for each ion and complete the table with flame colors. The document prepares students to understand and apply flame testing knowledge to exam questions.

To outline the steps in

carrying out flame tests Keywords:
Ion, Bunsen burner,
Lithium, Potassium, Sodium,
To know the positive tests Calcium, Copper

You need to be able to
understand the methods
for doing these tests.

You need to be able to

apply this knowledge to
exam questions.
PROBLEMS WITH A FLAME TEST

● Many compounds contain small amounts of sodium

compounds as impurities, so the intense colour of
sodium can hide other colours
● Describing colours with words is subjective- people
have different levels of colour vision, and a word
description of a colour may mean different colours to
different people
Experiment time!
Metal ions produce a ______ if heated strongly in a flame.
Ions from ________ metals produce ______ _______.
The flame test is thus used to identify metal ions by the
colour of the flame they produce.
Dip the loop of an _________ metal wire such as nichrome or
platinum in dilute acid and rinse with distilled water.
This cleans the wire loop and avoids ____________. This is
an important step as the test will only work if there are
just ____ ____ of ion present.
Two or more ions means the colours will mix, making
identification difficult and erroneous.
Dip the loop into the solid sample and place it in the edge of
the ____ Bunsen flame.
