CRT Television

A CRT TV uses cathode ray tubes to display images. It has several sections including a power supply section, horizontal and vertical scanning sections, audio and control sections, and a picture tube section. The picture tube section uses an electron gun to produce electron beams that are scanned across a fluorescent screen by magnetic deflection coils, creating a rasterized image. A degaussing coil can be used to remove minor magnetism from the screen.

lA CRT TV is a television device that uses cathode

ray tubes. These tubes contain one or more
electron guns and fluorescent screens that are
used to view images.
Parts and functions of a crt tv:
a. RF and input section
b.The power supply section
c. Horizontal section
d.Vertical section
e.Audio section
f. Control section
g. Chroma section
h.The picture tube section
a. RF tuners and the inputs
• TheinpTheinpTheinheieteaetunThetunThetuhete
tuner receives information transmitted over the
airwaves, uses the information to recreate both
sounds and images.
• The tuner allows the TV to identify the signal
relating to a specific station.
• Today televisions also have a range of video and
audio input sockets that allow them to get
information.
b. The power supply
• A crt tv uses a switched mode type power
supply. This section supplies the power
demand of different sections of the system.
Image scanning section
• This part of a crt tv mainly composes the
hirizontal and vertical sections. The horizontal
and vertical signal elements are generated from
the video IC respectively.
c. Horizontal section: this section controls the
movement of the beam horizontally on to the
picture tube scanning lines to form the predefined
frame of pictures per second, usually the hertz
(15625hz).
Horizontal section composes: horizontal driver
transistor, horizontal coupling transformer,
d. Vertical section: this section controls the
movement of the beam vertically on to the
picture tube scanning lines to form the
predefined frame of pictures per second, usually
the hertz (60hz).
The vertical section composes mainly the
vertical IC and the verical deflection coil.
e. Control section
f. The picture tube section
• This section mainly organizes the reproduction of
the original picture. It composes of
ü deflection yoke: Its purpose is for creating a
rapidly changing powerful magnetic field, which
deflects the beam of electrons to establish a
raster on the screen. The coil consists of copper
windings shaped to fit around the electron gun
assembly. There are usually two coils, where one
coil controls the movement of the beam side-to-
side, whilst the other controls the vertical
movement of the beam.
• The side-to-side movement of the beam, known
as horizontal scanning, produces a horizontal
line. However, in order to create a raster, each
line has to be repositioned one-step below the
next. In this way, a complete raster consisting of
625 lines forms the basis of a single frame of
image. Another deflection coil, which is part of
the vertical deflection circuit, controls the
positioning of each horizontal line.
ü electron gun: The electron gun section of the
cathode ray tube provides a sharply focused
electron beam directed towards the fluorescent
coated screen.
• An electron gun is a multi-stage assembly of
components, which produces and controls a fine
stream of electrons using the principle of
thermionic emission. At a very basic level, the
assembly consists of a heater element, which
heats the cathode to produce free electrons.
• A colour television usually has three electron guns
producing three individual beams of electrons.
These beams of electrons fall on their respective
ü Degaussing coil
• A colour television usually has a shadow mask,
which is extremely sensitive to magnetism. If it
becomes magnetised, it may cause improper
beam landing resulting in patches of colour on
various parts of the screen. If the magnetism is
minor, a television receiver set may correct it
automatically as many sets have a built in
degaussing coil. Usually situated around the
edges of the screen, and held by a rope, it
automatically activates when the television
switches ON.
