Lesson 2 Graphs of Quadratic Functions

This document discusses key concepts about graphs of quadratic functions including: - Parabolas are the graphs of quadratic functions with a vertex (highest/lowest point), axis of symmetry (line dividing the graph into reflections), and opening upward or downward. - The direction a parabola opens depends on whether it is a maximum or minimum point. - Graphing quadratic functions in vertex form involves determining the vertex (h,k) using the equation, finding x-intercepts and y-intercepts, and plotting the vertex and intercepts to connect into a smooth curve. - Examples are given to sketch graphs of quadratic functions in vertex form, identify features like the vertex and domain/range, and write the equation of

LESSON 2:

Graphs of Quadratic
Functions
Graphs of Quadratic Function

• Parabola – graph of the quadratic function

• Vertex – turning point of the parabola
• Axis of Symmetry – a line which divides the
graph into two parts such that one-half of the
graph is the reflection of the other half
Graphs of Quadratic Function
Opening of the graph

opens upward
vertex – minimum point

opens downward
vertex – maximum point

Graphing a Parabola with Equation in Vertex Form

1. Determine whether the parabola opens upward or

downward.
2. Determine the vertex of the parabola. The vertex is (h,
k).
3. Find any x-intercept by replacing f(x) with 0. Solve
the resulting equation of x.
4. Find any y-intercept by replacing x with 0. Solve the
resulting equation of y.
5. Plot the intercepts and vertex. Connect this points with
a smooth curve.
Examples:
Sketch the graph of each quadratic function and
identify the vertex, domain, range, and the opening of
the graph. State whether the vertex is a minimum or
maximum point, and write the equation of its axis of
symmetry.
