Double Angle

The document discusses deriving the double-angle formulas for trigonometric functions. It presents the sum formulas for sine, cosine, and tangent of α + β. It then shows that by putting β = α in these formulas, the double-angle formulas are obtained: sin 2α = 2sinαcosα, cos 2α = cos2α - sin2α, and tan 2α = 2tanα/(1-tan2α). Examples are provided to demonstrate using the double-angle formulas to find trigonometric functions of 2α given sinα or cosα. The goal is to express everything in terms of the original trig functions without solving for α.

 Understanding the double angle theorem
 The double angle theorem focuses on Objectiv
finding a way to rewrite trigonometric
functions of 2 α in terms of sin α, cos α or
e
tan α.

PAGE 2
The sum of compound angles formula
 sin (α + β) = sin α cos β + cos α sin β

 cos (α + β) = cos α cos β – sin α sin β

 tan (α+ β) = [tan α + tanβ] / [1 – tan α tan β]

Double angle formulas

 Sin 2 α = 2sin α cos α
 cos 2 α = cos2 α- sin2 α
= 2 cos2 α-1
= 1-2 sin2 α
 tan 2 α = 2tan α / 1- sin2 α

Proof of the double-angle
The double-angle formulas are proved from the sum formulas by putting β = α We have

This is the first of the three versions of cos 2 α. To derive the second version, in line (1) use this Pythagorean
identity:

Proof of the double-angle -Contd
To derive the third version, in line (1) use this Pythagorean identity:

Similarly, we can prove this for tan2α.

tan 2α = 2tanα/ 1- tan2α

PAGE 5
Proof of the double-angle -Contd
Example 1 : If Sin α = 3/5 0 < α < π/2 Find Sin(2α) , Cos(2α) and tan(2α)
Cosα = adj/hyp = 4/5 AB2 = AC2 + BC2
Tanα = Opp/Adj =3/4 52 = AC2 + 32
AC2 =25-9
Sin(2α) = 2 Sinα Cosα
AC2=16
= 2(2/5) (4/5)
AC = 4
=24/25
Cos(2α) = Cos2 α - Sin2 α tan(2α) = Sin(2α) / Cos(2α)
=(4/5)2 – (3/5)2 =(24/25) / (7/25)
=(16/25) – (9/25) =(24/7)
=7/25

tan(2α) = 2tanα / (1-tan2α)

=2(3/4) / 1-(3/4) 2
=(3/2) / (1-(9/16))
=(3/2) / (16-9/16)
=(3/2) / (7/16)
=(3/2) * (16/7) =(3 * 8) /7
=(24/7)

Example 2 : If Cos α = 5/13 3π/2 < α < 2π Find Sin(2α) , Cos(2α) and tan(2α)
Sinα = -12/13 AB2 = BC2 + AC2
Tanα = -12/5 132 = 52 + AC2
AC2 =132 - 52
Sin(2α) = 2 Sinα Cosα
AC2=169 -25 = 144
= 2(-12/13) (5/13)
AC = 12
=-120/169
Cos(2α) = Cos2 α - Sin2 α tan(2α) = Sin(2α) / Cos(2α)
=(5/13)2 – (-12/13)2 =(-120/169) / (-119/169)
=(25/169) – (144/169) =120/119
=-119/169
