• explain accurately the need for safety in the working environment;
• distinguish between the two (2) categories of safety outline by the
teacher without error;
• give five (5) examples of personal safety equipment that must be

workshop as well as the working environment.

WHAT IS SAFETY?
Safety is a state of being protected from potential harm such as
personal injury and safe guarding against damage to machine, tools
and materials.

IMPORTANCE OF SAFETY IN THE WORKING
ENVIRONMENT
Workplace health and safety procedures are necessary for the
well-being of both employers and employees. Safety in
the workplace Prevents.

Loss of time – decrease in production or


manufacturing.

Inefficiency – slower production rate and waste of


materials.

Loss of finances – money will have to be spent on


medical fees and/or the replacement or repair of
tools and machines.

TYPES OF SAFETY

General Safety: Safety is defined as being safety


by preventing personal injury, safe guarding
against damage to machine, tools and
materials.

Personal Safety: Personal safety refers not only


to physical safety (freedom from physical
harm) but also to psychological safety.

Tool safety : In the process of removing or


avoiding the hazards, workers must learn to
recognize the hazards associated with the
different types of tools and the safety
precautions necessary to prevent those
hazards.

Material safety: In the process of removing or


avoiding the hazards when working with
materials

House keeping Safety: ensuring the work


environment is clean and free or hazard at all
times.

Fire safety: refers to precautions that are taken


to prevent or reduce the likelihood of a fire
that may result in death, injury, or property
damage.

Hygiene safety: is the practice of ensuring the


general health and safety to prevent injuries
and illness.
SAFETY PROVISION

This is the process of taking the necessary


precautionary measures beforehand in
preparation for potential risk or safety hazards
in the work environment, to people, materials,
tools and equipment. Its purpose is to reduce or
eliminate as far as possible any potential risk or
safety hazards exist.

• Having an emergency action plan
• Fire protection plan
• Evacuation policy and procedures
• Emergency escape procedures and route
assignments, such as floor plans, workplace maps,
and safe or refuge areas
• Emergency alarm
• Fire extinguishers at strategic locations
• First aid kit
• Safety signs

• Emergency stop buttons in workshops


• Emergency lighting
• Working Smoke detectors in strategic locations in
the home or workplace, such as the kitchen, near
bedrooms, and near fireplaces or stoves

GENERAL SAFETY RULES
 Always keep full attention on the job task at
hand.
 Observe and practice the safety procedures
established for the job.
 In case of sickness or injury, no matter how
slight, report at once to your supervisor.
 Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery
around machinery. It may catch on moving
equipment and cause a serious injury.
GENERAL SAFETY RULES

 Observe obey all safety warning signs


 Keep your work area clean.
 Report any unsafe condition or acts to your
supervisor.
 Running and horseplay are strictly
forbidden
 Do not tamper with electric controls or
switches.
