DEFINITION OF
DEFINITE INTEGRAL
Definition of Definite Integral
The integral (sometimes called the definite integral) of a function f(x) between x = a and x =
b is denoted
And may be interpreted as the area of the region bounded by the graph of y = f(x), the x axis,
and the vertical lines x = a and x = b(ab) (Figure 12-1). Any area above the x axis is given a
positive value; any area below the x axis is given a negative value. The function f(x) is called
the integrand. The values xa and x = b are called the limits of integration.
The notation for an integral resembles the notation for an antiderivative. This is because you
can calculate integrals using antiderivatives.
Example 1
Evaluate by finding the area of the appropriate region.
Example 2
by finding the area of the appropriate region.
Solution: First examine the region bounded by the graphs of y=1x, the x axis, x
= 2, and x =3, as shown in Figure 12-3. You can view the region as a rectangle
and a triangle, so you have Figure 12-3 area of triangle + area of rectangle.
That is all. Thank you!!
