The document discusses definite integrals, including sigma notation, Riemann sums, and the definition of a definite integral. Sigma notation provides a concise way to write sums as Σ. Riemann sums approximate integrals by dividing the interval into subintervals and summing the areas of rectangles. The definite integral from a to b of a function f(x) represents the area between the graph of f(x), the x-axis, and the lines x=a and x=b. Examples are provided to evaluate definite integrals using Riemann sums and by finding the appropriate region areas.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of the discussion students are expected to:

• Appreciate Sigma Notation

• Calculate the area of a region bounded by a graph using Riemann’s

Sum

• Define and evaluate definite integrals

SIGMA NOTATION
&
RIEMANN’S SUM
SIGMA NOTATION
A more concise way of expressing the sum of a1 + a2 + a3 + a4 +… + an is to use the
summation notation or sigma notation.

The Greek letter Σ (sigma) tells us to add or sum up the terms

RIEMANN’S SUM

A Riemann sum is an approximation of the integral of a function over an

interval. It’s calculated by dividing the interval into smaller subintervals,
then summing up the areas of rectangles (or other shapes) that approximate
the area under the curve. The height of each rectangle is determined by the
function’s value at a specific point within the subinterval, and the width is
the length of the subinterval. As the subintervals become finer (smaller), the
Riemann sum converges to the exact value of the integral.
Types of Riemann’s sum

Left hand side Riemann’s sum

- The left sum uses the height at the left
side of each subinterval.

Right hand side Riemann’s sum

- The right sum uses the height at the
right side of the subinterval.
For very simple functions (eg, polynomials of low degree) you can
explicitly calculate limit of the Riemann sums without antidifferentiating.
You may need the following formulas:
Example 1
Find the approximate area under the curve of the given interval, where n = 8. Use left and right
hand side Riemann’s sum for better approximation.

Solution:
Example 3
Find the area of the region bounded by the graphs of f(x) = 2x, x = 0, x = 1 and the x axis by
calculating the limit of the Riemann sums.

DEFINITION OF
DEFINITE INTEGRAL
Definition of Definite Integral

The integral (sometimes called the definite integral) of a function f(x) between x = a and x =
b is denoted

And may be interpreted as the area of the region bounded by the graph of y = f(x), the x axis,
and the vertical lines x = a and x = b(ab) (Figure 12-1). Any area above the x axis is given a
positive value; any area below the x axis is given a negative value. The function f(x) is called
the integrand. The values xa and x = b are called the limits of integration.
The notation for an integral resembles the notation for an antiderivative. This is because you
can calculate integrals using antiderivatives.
Example 1
Evaluate by finding the area of the appropriate region.
Example 2
by finding the area of the appropriate region.

Solution: First examine the region bounded by the graphs of y=1x, the x axis, x
= 2, and x =3, as shown in Figure 12-3. You can view the region as a rectangle
and a triangle, so you have Figure 12-3 area of triangle + area of rectangle.
That is all. Thank you!!
