Shear and Moment Diagrams Examples

1) The document provides examples of calculating shear force and bending moment diagrams for beams with different load conditions. 2) Example 2 shows a simply supported beam with a uniformly distributed load, resulting in a triangular shear force diagram and parabolic bending moment diagram. 3) Example 3 is a cantilever beam with a point load at the free end, producing a constant shear force diagram and linear bending moment diagram. 4) Example 4 analyzes a cantilever with a uniformly distributed load, giving a triangular shear force diagram and quadratic bending moment diagram.

DIAGRAMS
EXAMPLES (CONT)
EXAMPLE 2

wx
L

Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams of the simply supported beam with a uniformly distributed load.
SOLUTION TO EXAMPLE 2
• The beam as well as the load is symmetrical. To find the reactions,
find the equivalent load on the beam given by wL. This load will be
shared equally between the supports so
= =
• Calculation of shear forces
• The beam has just one section in the interval 0 x L from the LHS
• The origin, 0 coincides with point A
EXAMPLE 2 (CONT)
At a distance x from the origin, the shear force is given by
= - wx (remember the sign convention)
At x = 0,
=0
=
At x = L,
= - wL = -
EXAMPLE 2 (CONT)
At x =
= -w=0
• NOTE
At concentrated (point) loads, there are two values of the shear force,
one immediately to the left of the load, the other immediately to the
right when working from left to right along the beam.
EXAMPLE 2 (CONT)
= - wL + = 0
• Calculation of bending moments
At distance from the origin,
=x-
At x = 0,
=0
At x = ,

EXAMPLE 3
W

A B

Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams of the cantilever with a point load at the free
end.
SOLUTION TO EXAMPLE 3
• Cantilevers are solved by calculating the shear forces and bending
moments without first determining the reactions as they appear as
the shear force and bending moment in the fixed end
• Calculation of shear forces:
• Start from the free end as the origin and work from right to left along
the beam
• The beam has one section within the interval 0x

At x = L

• Calculation of bending moment:
At distance x from the origin,
= - WX
EXAMPLE 3 (CONT)
• At x = 0,

Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams of the cantilever with a uniformly distributed
load
SOLUTION TO EXAMPLE 4
• The cantilever has one section in the interval 0 x with the free end as
the origin
• At distance x from the origin,
= wx
At x = 0,
