Introduction
. At the heart of language teaching and learning
are the materials which serve as the portal into
the actualization of a language pedagogy. These
materials are offshoot of a principled
understanding of what constitute an effective
language learning.
4
The materials that language teachers will develop
can inform current teaching practice and can also
provide an avenue for the application of language
teaching theories.
A Teachers plays different role in the classroom.
As a classroom manager she has to plan carefully
how lessons are to be delivered with the
appropriate learning materials to be used.

With the plethora of available language learning
materials online a teacher's crucial role is the select the
“right“ materials critically that reflect the reality of
his/her students.
As block (1991) in Salas (2004) states that “despite the
bounteousness harvest of ELT materials, they do not
always provide the type of text and activities that a
teacher is seeking for a given class”.

Thus, teachers have a choice either to
adapt the already existing materials or
create their own to suit their needs.

Materials for the teaching of vocabulary

•Vocabulary is a key to English language
learning for without it, it would be difficult
for anyone to convey ideas or understand
other people. It glues everything else

Question
• How many words do you think should a grade 1
student know upon entering school ?
• How many more words does he/she need to learn as
he/she goes to the next grade?
• How many words a grade 7 students should already
know?
• Or how many vocabulary words do you know as a
college students now ?
Presentation title 10
In a classroom scenario, students hesitate to speak up
because they either “don’t have the right words” or “are
out of words” to express what they want to say. For a
second or foreign language learners of English, shortage
of words means shortage of idea.
Let’s have a quick exercise, shall we ?

Continuation..
Mastering the vocabulary of a target language also
facilitates the acquisition of all other skills such us,
listening, speaking reading and writing. According
to Richard (2002:255), vocabulary is the core
component of language proficiency and provides
much of the basis for how well learners speak,
listen, read and write.

State that vocabulary is a list of target language words.
In addition, Richard and Schmidt (2002:580) state that
vocabulary is a set of lexeme, including single words,
compound word, and idioms. Vocabulary is all word in
a language which is used by people to convey ideas or
feeling. Cameron (2001:72)
