Cloud Storage and Local Storage

This document compares and contrasts cloud storage and local storage. It begins by defining cloud storage as storing data on the internet through a cloud computing provider that can be accessed from anywhere. Local storage refers to storing data on a device physically near the one being used, like an external hard drive. The document then discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each type of storage, such as cloud storage providing unlimited scalability but requiring internet access, while local storage is easier to use but has limited space. It concludes by comparing criteria like capacity, cost, and accessibility between cloud and local storage in a table.

INTRODUCTION
Understanding the complexities of storage options is
critical in an era when digital information is at the centre
of our personal and professional life. Today, we'll take a
look at two key data management examples: cloud
storage and local storage. In this presentation, we will
delve into the fundamental aspects of both local and
cloud storage. We are going to explore the accessibility,
security, cost, and capacity together, drawing
comparisons between local storage and cloud storage. As
we investigate these opposing perspectives, our goal is to
provide you with the knowledge you need to make
informed judgements about the storage solutions that
best meet your needs.
Cloud storage is a cloud computing model that
enables storing data and files on the internet
through a cloud computing provider that you

provider securely stores, manages, and maintains

capacity. Cloud storage removes the need to buy
and manage your own data storage infrastructure,
giving you agility, scalability, and durability, with
any time, anywhere data access.
ADVANTAGES OF CLOUD STORAGE
Disaster Recovery
● When you use cloud storage, data is at a reduced risk of
system failure since all data is stored and backed-up on
an external device often thousands of miles away from
your own location. This means you avoid expensive
data retrieval that follows an all-too-common hard- Security

data storage needs. You simply extend the amount of
available storage by varying how much you pay.
DISADVANTAGES OF CLOUD STORAGE

● Maintaining access to data stored in the cloud can also

be an issue and could significantly increase the cost of
using cloud storage. A company may need to upgrade
its connection to the cloud storage service to handle the Difficult to migrate
volume of data it expects to transmit. ● Once you’ve signed up and started using
one particular cloud storage provider, it is
difficult to migrate data to another cloud
provider later on.
Requires Internet
● If your Internet connection fails, so does your access to
remotely stored data. Internet failure thus leads to
costly downtime when your business heavily relies on
cloud storage. Furthermore if your Internet connection
is slow you will need to wait a long time in order to
access your remotely stored data.

WORK?
WHAT IS LOCAL
STORAGE?
Local storage refers to the storage of data on a device
that is physically located near the device being used, as
opposed to being stored remotely on a server or cloud.
Examples of local storage devices include hard drives,
solid state drives, and USB drives.

Local storage can be used to retain information in the

event of a power outage or system crash by saving
important data to the local storage device rather than
relying on an internet connection or remote server. This
ensures that the data is accessible even if the device or
network experiences a disruption. For example, a user
might save important documents to a local hard drive or
USB drive in case their computer crashes or they lose
internet connectivity. This allows them to access the data
even if their computer is not functioning properly or they
cannot connect to the internet.
ADVANTAGES OF LOCAL STORAGE

Easier to use than Cloud storage

● For a new user, Cloud Storage has a small learning curve.
But, Local storage is more user friendly and easier to
access.

Large amount of space available

● An external hard drive is available in range of sizes.
Cloud providers rarely offer such huge amounts of space.

No Internet Connectivity Required

● You don’t need an Internet Connection to access, upload,
or download your files on local storage.

Speed is faster
● Faster Read and Write speeds are seen on Local storage.
DISADVANTAGES OF LOCAL STORAGE

Limited Accessibility
● It can only be accessed on one device at a time.

Inconvenient Sharing
● With local storage, you cannot collaborate with other
users. And sharing options are not very friendly
either!

Expensive
● Purchasing an external hard drive is a relatively expensive
option than investing in cloud storage.

Vulnerable to Unexpected Events

● A hard drive is prone to being lost, broken, damaged or
unexpected situations like floods, fires, etc.

THE END!
When deciding between cloud storage
and local storage, it's critical to examine
your specific needs and preferences.
Cloud storage provides ease,
accessibility, and the ability to transfer
data simply. Local storage, on the other
hand, allows you speedier access and
greater control over your data. So it
really depends on what is most important
to you. In conclusion, have their own
advantages, disadvantages etc and the
decision comes down to what works best
for you.
