Citing sources

practical research i
Going back to the past
Have you conducted research when you were in
Grade 10?
Are you familiar with the word “citation”?
In your own words, what is citation?

In which part of the research do you cite?

By the end of the lesson, students will be
able to

01 understand the process of citing sources

using APA 7th edition guideline;

02 incorporate paraphrasing, direct quoting,

summarizing, and synthesizing techniques
in writing a text; and

03 display deeper appreciation for research.

What is citation?
A citation identifies for the reader the original
source for an idea, information, or image that
is referred to in a work (UCSA University
Library, n.d.).
Two parts in citation
According to APA 7th edition (2019), there are
two parts of citation in a paper. Also, use the
author-date citation system to cite references in
the text in APA Style.
in-text Reference list

compiled on a References or Works

information used. information of the source.
in-text citation
In an in-text citation, provide the
surname(s) of the author(s) or the
name(s) of the group author(s),
and the date of publication.
PARENTHETICAL vs
NARRATIVE CITATION
PARENTHETICAL
Both CITATION
the author and the date, separated by a
comma, appear in parenthesis for a parenthetical
citation. A parenthetical citation can appear within or
at the end of a sentence. When a parenthetical citation
is at the end of a sentence, put a period or the other end
punctuation after the closing parenthesis.
examples

Falsely balanced news coverage can distort

the public’s perception of expert consensus on
an issue (Koelher, 2016).
Narrative citation
The author appears in running
text and the date appears in
parentheses immediately after
the author name for a narrative
citation.
examples
Koehler (2016) noted the dangers of falsely
balanced news coverage.

Paraphrases and quotations
paraphrasing
A paraphrase restates another's idea (or your own
previously published idea) in your own words.
Paraphrasing is an effective writing strategy because
it allows authors to summarize and synthesize
information from one or more sources, focus on
significant information, and compare and contrast
relevant details.
LONG paraphrases
A paraphrase may continue for several
sentences. In such cases, cite the work being
paraphrased on the first mention. Once the
work has been cited, it is not necessary to
repeat the citation.

direct quotation
A direct quotation reproduces words verbatim from
another work or from your own previously published
work. Use direct quotations rather than paraphrasing
when reproducing an exact definition, when an
author has said something memorably, or when you
want to respond to the exact wording.
direct quotation
The format of a direct quotation depends on its
length (fewer than 40 words vs. 40 words or more).
Regardless of quotation length, do not insert an
ellipsis at the beginning and/or end of a quotation
unless the original source includes an ellipsis.
Short quotations
If a quotation consists of fewer than 40 words, treat
it as a short quotation: Incorporate it into the text and
enclose it within double quotation marks. For a
direct quotation, always include a full citation
(parenthetical or narrative) in the same sentence as
the quotation.
Block quotations
If a quotation contains 40 words or more, treat it as a
block quotation. Do not use quotation marks to
enclose a block quotation. Start a block quotation on
a new line and indent the whole block 0.5 in. from
the left margin.
Summarizing

Summarizing involves putting the main

idea(s) into your own words, including
only the main point(s).
Synthesizing

Synthesis is the combining of two or more

information or ideas to produce something
new.
Writing workshop
For the activity, the group must collaborate to
produce a cohesive essay reflecting on the
SOGIE bill. Each member will contribute by
paraphrasing, direct quoting, summarizing, and
synthesizing relevant information from the bill
and other sources.

Through this collective effort, they will construct

a comprehensive and informed analysis that
explores the significance, controversies, and
