Diwali

Diwali is a Hindu festival of lights celebrated in many countries around the world. It is celebrated in late October or November with lamps, fireworks, and time with family. Diwali commemorates different events depending on the Hindu tradition, such as the return of Rama and Sita to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana or the day that Lord Krishna defeated the demon Narakasura. What is it?
- Diwali or Deepavali is a festival of light
- according to a report, the festival of Diwali is
celebrated every year in more than 90
countries of the world
- it is mostly celebrated in Hindu countries like
India
- Diwali is not celebrated in the same way in
every Hindu country
Celebrations outside of India
- Leicester, in the north of England, has one of the most
important Diwali celebrations outside of India
- the Festival of Light in Leicester starts with a display of
thousands of lights along Belgrave Road, also known as
“The Golden Mile”
- the main day of the festival of Diwali (the day of
Lakshmi Puja) is an official holiday in: Fiji,
Guyana, India, Malaysia, Mauritius, Myanmar,
Nepal, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Suriname
and Trinidad and Tobago
- in Nepal, people celebrate Lord Krishna’s victory
over the wicked king Narakaasura

When is it celebrated?
- Diwali is celebrated twenty days after the
Vijayadashami festival (Vijayadashami festival is a
celebration of goddess Druga’s victory over a
buffalo demon)
- it is spread among five days starting with Dhanteras
on 2nd of November 2021 and lasting until 6th of
November 2021, with Bhai Dooj
- it starts on 15th day of Kartik month on Hindu
calendar, which translates to between middle
October and middle November

Why is it celebrated?
- the main reason Diwali is celebrated is
because it celebrates the victory of light over
darkness
- Indians also light clay lamps outside their
homes to symbolize the inner light that
protects them from spiritual darkness
- in some northern Hindu communities of India,
the festival of Diwali signifies the start of a
new year
Diwali in Hinduism
- Diwali is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhists and
Jainism
- Hindus celebrate the return of prince Rama and
princess Sita to Ayodhya after their exile that
lasted for 14 years
- they were exiled because the king (Rama’s father)
had promised one of his wives two wishes and
because she wanted her young son to be on the
throne instead of Prince Rama, she wished for
her younger son to be the king

Diwali in Sikhism
- Sikhism is a religion founded in the region of
Punjab (in India and Pakistan) in late 15th century
- Sikhs celebrate the release of the sixth guru
Hargobind Singh from prison in 1619, but they
celebrated Diwali even before this year
- one of the most important places of the Sikh
world (The Golden Temple at Amritsar) was built
in 1577
Diwali in Jainism
- Jainism is an ancient Indian religion
- it is in many ways similar to Buddhism,
however unlike Buddhists, Jains do believe in
the existence of a soul
- Jains celebrate the moment in which the
founder of Jainism (Lord Mahavira) reached
Moksha (eternal bliss)

- there are many kinds of traditional food eaten on Diwali
- some examples are:

1. Rice Kheer 2. Samosa 3. Gajar Ka Halwa

- these are just a few examples of many other food eaten

How do they celebrate it?
- on the first day (Dhanteras) people buy gold, silver and clothes as
a sign of good luck
- on the second day (Naraka Chaturdasi) people wake up early in
the morning and bathe in natural oils and change into clean
clothes
- on the third day (Lakshmi Puja) families exchange gifts and
sweets and celebrate the evening together, it is also the day
when the main celebration of Diwali takes place
- on the fourth day (Govardhan Puja) people offer many varieties
of vegetarian food to Lord Krishna as a mark of gratitude
- on the fifth day (Bhai Dooj) siblings get together and show their
love for each other by exchanging gifts

What else do they do?
- it is a tradition for families to exchange gifts
during Diwali
- the festival is one time of the year when
families from all parts of the world reunite
- close and extended families pay visits to one
another to spend some quality time together
Similarities
- Christmas and New Year in Croatia are much like Diwali in India
- Diwali is to many Indians what Christmas is to Christians
- it is also customary for families to go to temples together on
this day
- in Croatia, popular customs include going to church,
exchanging gifts, decorating Christmas trees and sharing meals
with family and friends
- some cities also put on spectacular public displays of fireworks
- this is similar to our New Year where we have fireworks, lots of
lights and a good time
