Module 2 Part 2 - The NTH Term of An Arithmetic Sequence

Here are the solutions to the problems: 1) The first term is 4. The common difference is 6. So the first 5 terms are: 4, 10, 16, 22, 28 2) a1 = 3, d = 4 an = a1 + (n-1)d a30 = 3 + (30-1)4 = 3 + 29*4 = 3 + 116 = 119 3) a2 = 24, a5 = 36 a5 = a1 + (5-1)d = a1 + 4d 36 = a1 + 4d 24 = a1 + d 12 = 3d d = 4 a1 = 20

Finding the nth Term of

an Arithmetic Sequence
Part 2
Example: 24, 14, 4, ….
The common difference d = -10.
We obtained the next three terms by adding -10.
a2 = a1 + (-10)
a2 = 24 + (-10)
a2 = 14
In symbols, if a1 is the first term, and d is the
common difference, then the terms of an
arithmetic sequence can be enumerated in the
following manner:
a1 = the first term
a2 = a1 + d
a3 = (a1 + d) + d or a1 + 2d
a4 = (a1 + 2d) + d or a1 + 3d
a5 = (a1 + 3d) + d or a1 + 4d
In general,
an= a1 + (n -1) d
nth term
the first term
no. of terms
common difference
Illustrative Example:
2, 9, 16, 23, …

a1 2
a2 = a1 + d 2+7=9
a3 = (a2 + d) 9 + 7 = 16
a4 = (a3+ d) 16 + 7 =23
Illustrative Example:
2, 9, 16, 23, …

a1 2
a2 = a1 + d 2+7=9
a3 = a1 + 2d 2 + 2(7) =16
a4 = a1 + 3d 2 + 3(7) = 23
an= a1 + (n -1) d a1 + (n -1) d =an
Examples:
A. Find the 21st term of the arithmetic
sequence: 4, 7, 10, 13, …
Solution: 7–4=3 Thus, the 21st
a1= 4, d = 3, n = 21 term is 64.
an= a1 + (n -1) d
a21= 4 + (21 -1) 3
a21= 4 + (20) 3
a21= 4 + 60 = 64
B. Find the 14th term of the arithmetic
sequence 5, 7, 9, 11, …
Solution: 11– 9 =2
a1= 5 ; d = 2 ; n = 14 Thus, the 14th
an= a1 + (n -1) d
term is 31.
a14= 5 + (14 -1) 2
a14= 5 + (13) 2
a14= 5 + 26 = 31
a14= 31
Remember:
The nth term of an arithmetic sequence is
defined as an= a1 + (n -1) d;
where an = the nth term,
a1 = the first term,
n = the no. of terms and
d = the common difference.

Answer the following:
1.) Given the sequence 9,18, 27, …90, which term is 90?
Solution:
an= a1 + (n -1)d
Given:
90 = 9 + (n – 1)9
a1 = 9
90 – 9 = 9n – 9
d =9 81 + 9 = 9n
an = 90 90 = 9n
Find: 9 9
n=? 10 = n
Therefore, 90 is 10th term.
Answer the following:
2.) Given the sequence __,18, 27,36, what is the first
term?
Solution:
Given: an= a1 + (n -1)d
d =9 36 = a1 + (4 – 1)9
an = 36 36 = a1 + (3)9
n=4 36 = a1 + 27
Find: 36 – 27 = a1
a1 = ? 9 = a1
Therefore, 9 is the 1st term.
Answer the following:
3.) Given the sequence whose a1 is 9 and a4 is 36, what
is the common difference?
Solution:
Given: an= a1 + (n -1)d
a1 = 9 36 = 9 + (4 – 1)d
a4 = 36 36 = 9 + (3)d
n=4 36- 9 = 3d
Find: 27 = 3d
d=? 3 3
9=d
