PDC PPT

This document discusses various pulse modulation techniques used in communication systems, including PAM, PWM, PPM, and PCM. PAM encodes information by changing the amplitude of pulses, PWM uses pulse width, PPM uses pulse position, and PCM converts analog signals to digital codes. Each technique has advantages like noise immunity but also disadvantages like bandwidth usage. They find applications in areas like Ethernet, motor control, audio/video, and telephony.

PULSE MODULATION
• Pulse modulation is a type of modulation in which the signal is transmitted
in the form of pulses. It can be used to transmit analogue information. In
pulse modulation, continuous signals are sampled at regular intervals.

• Four (4) Methods

1. PAM
Analog Pulse Modulation
2. PWM
3. PPM Digital Pulse Modulation
4. PCM
PULSE AMPLITUDE MODULATION (PAM)
A modulation system in which amplitude of discrete carrier signal changes in
accordance with the instantaneous amplitude of modulating signal (message
signal) keeping width and position of carrier constant is called as PAM.

PAM Generator
TYPES OF PAM

There are 2 types of PAM :

1. Natural sampling
2. Flat top sampling
NATURAL SAMPLING
FLAT TOP SAMPLING
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

Advantages of PAM
• Generation and detection is easy.
Disadvantages of PAM
• Added noise cannot be removed easily as it has impact on amplitude which
carries information.
• Transmission bandwidth is too large.
APPLICATIONS OF PAM

• Mainly used in Ethernet communication.

• Mainly microcontrollers use this technique in order to generate
control signals.
• It is used in photo-biology.
• It acts as an electronic driver for led circuits.
PULSE WIDTH MODULATION (PWM)

The modulation system in which width of the discrete carrier signal

changes in accordance with the instantaneous amplitude of
modulating signal(message signal) keeping amplitude and position
of carrier constant is called as PWM.
PWM GENERATOR AND WAVEFORM

GENERATOR WAVEFORM
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

Advantages of PWM
• Very good noise immunity.
• Its possible to separate out signal from noise.
Disadvantages of PWM
• Bandwidth requirement is large as compared to PAM.
APPLICATIONS OF PWM

• The pulse width modulation technique is used in telecommunication for

encoding purposes.
• The PWM helps in voltage regulation and therefore is used to control the
speed of motors.
• The PWM technique controls the fan inside a CPU of the computer, thereby
successfully dissipating the heat.
• PWM is used in Audio/Video Amplifiers.
PULSE POSITION MODULATION (PPM)

The modulation system in which position of the discrete carrier

signal changes in accordance with the instantaneous amplitude of
modulating signal(message signal) keeping amplitude and Width of
carrier constant is called as PPM.
PPM GENERATOR AND WAVEFORM

GENERATOR WAVEFORM
ADVANTAGE AND DISADVANTAGE

Advantage of PPM
• High noise immunity.
Disadvantage of PPM
• Generation and detection is complex.
APPLICATIONS OF PPM

• It is used in the air traffic control system and telecommunication

systems.
• Used in remote- controlled cars, planes and trains.
• It is used to compress data and hence it is used for storage.
PULSE CODE MODULATION ( PCM )

When a digital signal undergoes Pulse Code Modulation, it converts

the analog information into a binary sequence (1 and 0). Through
the demodulation process, we can obtain the original analog signal.

Pulse Code Modulation techniques are used to produce a series of

numbers or digits in binary form.
PCM GENERATOR AND WAVEFORM
GENERATOR WAVEFORM
ADVANTAGE AND DISADVANTAGE
Advantages of PCM
• Pulse Code Modulation is used in long-distance communication.
• Higher noise immunity is seen.
Disadvantages of PCM
• The bandwidth requirement is high.
• PCM is a complex process, since it involves encoding, decoding and
quantisation of the circuit.
APPLICATIONS OF PCM

• It is used in satellite transmission system.

• It is also used in space communication.
• It is used in telephony.
• One of the recent applications is the compact disc.
