OBJECTIVE:

Students are expected to use


proper punctuation marks.
Read aloud the sentences:
Pancho, the robber is here.

Pancho the robber, is here.


Children eat healthy food.
Children, eat healthy food.
Children eat healthy food?
Conclusion:
Punctuation marks make the
ideas clear according to what
the writer intends to make his
reader understand.
Uses of a PERIOD:
For a sentence that states a fact
or idea.
Ex: The perfect way to show your
love for a person is through
honesty.
After initials of proper names or
academic degrees.
Ex: Dr. Santos is one of the best surgeons
in town.
Ex: P.S. stands for post script, an
optional part in a letter.
At the end of an indirect question.
Ex: She asked the man if he can
help her with her luggage.
Uses of a QUESTION MARK
 for sentences that ask

questions.
Ex: Did you do your
homework?
for a tag question and words
inflected as query.
Ex: Maria does her homework
everyday, doesn’t she?

Ex: You really enjoyed the trip,


right?
To turn a declarative
sentence into question.
Ex: He didn’t pass the board
exam?
Ex: Mr. Vargas quit his job?
Uses of an EXCLAMATION
POINT
For a sentence that shows a
sudden gush of emotion.
Ex: This is the best thing that ever
happened to me!
for imperative sentences
that are said strongly.
Ex: Don’t touch that !
Ex: Beware of the dog!
USES OF A COMMA:
To separate words in a series.
Ex: I like mangoes,apples, and
oranges.
Use a comma & coordinating
conjunction(and,but,on,
yet,for) to join two independent
clauses.
Ex:The sun was hot, and the
wind was dry.
Ex: She arrived late, but she was
able to take the test.
For phrases used at the
beginning of a sentence.
Ex: After the rain,a rainbow
appeared in the sky.
To point out a subordinate
clause preceding its principal
clause.
Ex: Because he studied well, he
passed the exam.
To point off words used in
direct address.
Ex: Jessie, will you attend the
party tonight?
To separate an appositive from
the rest of the sentence.
Ex: Mr. Vargas,the
department’s chief, had been
promoted three weeks ago.

To set off interjections like yes,


no, well ,found at the beginning
of a sentence.
Ex: Yes, I know you so well.
To separate the day from the
months in dates and for
addresses within sentences.
Ex: The couple dined at Madina
Mall, Al Qusais.
 after a salutation and
complimentary close in letters.
Ex: Respectfully yours,
USES OF A HYPHEN
To make some compound
words.
Ex: The cave we had been to is
man-made.
As used in fractions
Ex: Three-fourths of the cake was
eaten.
Used to form new words
beginning with prefixes.
Ex: Grace used all-purpose
cream for her cake.
In using the prefix self, except
for selfish and selfless.
Ex: She lost her self-esteem after
the incident.
Ex: Selfish people are not likely
to experience happiness.
USES OF A COLON
To introduce a list of items.
Ex: You need to submit the
following: project, notebook
and reading log.
To introduce an explanation or
definition.
Ex: Covenant: An agreement
between two or more persons.
USES OF A SEMICOLON
To separate two independent
clauses in compound sentences
which could both stand on their
own.
Ex: She is a student during the
day; she is a call center agent at
night.
SEATWORK:
• Re-write the paragraph A , p.65 in
your notebook and follow the
instruction.(18 pts.)
• Do the same thing with paragraph
A, p. 73. ( 9 pts.)
• Answer nos. 1,3, and 5 on p.85
