Eulogy

Here are the key points I gathered from analyzing the poem "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost: - The speaker comes to a fork in the road where they must choose one path to follow out of two options - Both paths seem equally worn and just as fair as the other - The speaker chooses one path to follow despite knowing that it will make all the difference - In the future, the speaker may wonder about taking the other path not chosen and how it would have changed their life - The choice of path in this moment will shape the traveler's future and experiences - There is an underlying message about making choices and decisions in life that can't be undone and will impact one's journey Let

material be examined through the
formalist approach?
Run Papoy, run… to your freedom,
to your happiness, to the clouds
Many of us give importance to valuable things that we acquired either by
working for it (things bought, earned, awarded, etc.) or asking for it
(prayed for, wished for, hoped for, etc.). It’s hard for us to part from
them because although they are inanimate, they are deemed precious. I
was like that most of my life… always treasuring the hard work and
sentimentality that comes with my “precious things”; my awards,
clothes, appliances and what not. I thought having most of them will be
enough to fill my day to day goings-on. Heck, I even need some of it for
my job and everyday communication. All of that changed when a cute
husky pup, barely a month old was given to Mommy as a valentine
present.
We all grew fond of her… and we called her PAPOY. Don’t
know where that name came from. My niece just started
calling her by that name and she somehow responded to it so
that became her moniker. She was the usual cute and active
puppy and every kid in the neighborhood knew her. I’m sure
most of you know stories of pets that became family
members to their humans, Papoy was no exception. Maybe
she was not unique in the sense that she was just an ordinary
“don’t know a lot of tricks” puppy. She was a regular pet
that provided fun and laughter to her owners.
I didn’t take care of Papoy, I couldn’t. As much as I wanted to, being
in a wheelchair hinders me from even taking her out to potty. But I
think she understood me… Many times she would go to me so I would
be able to pat her head and stroke her fur. I liked it when she would
jump to my lap and rest her head down briefly. I thought it was so
sweet of her considering that I didn’t bathe her, feed her or play with
her. She just behaved herself around me and just licked my toes
occasionally. She would also give way when I needed to go to another
part of the house and she patiently waited for her turn to eat because
my mom had to serve food to the family first. She would even call my
attention when someone was at the door. In my mind Papoy
understood me in so many ways. She was considerate to someone like
me.
Every day was a happy day with Papoy around. Even when there’s
nothing else to see on TV or to do on my PC, she would still manage to
keep the family busy. I myself could just watch her for hours wag her
tail, bark at strangers or change positions as she slumbered. Doing the
most mundane stuffs around her made me content. I pretended that she
understood me when I said things to her, maybe she did sometimes. She
was a very good listener and an effective stress reliever. She kept me
company a lot of times when people had to leave to attend to something
important. She was the go-between when we all needed to bond with
each other. She was the family mascot.
We wanted so many things for dear Papoy. My niece bought a lot of
dog food so she can have variety and get the nutrition that she
needed. I scheduled a home-service groomer to come to the house.
I even planned to send her to some fancy vet clinic sometime this
month. I was shopping for online discount coupons for it. It was
just so sudden. She was more “behaved” than usual and would not
even trouble the others for the usual “potty time”. And when she
could not control her LBM she just sulked in a corner perhaps too
embarrassed of the mess that she made. We followed advises from
other dog owners to just give her sugar solution and purified water
for a day. They said that would stop the dehydration and there’s no
cause for alarm.
By now I know you realize that this has a sad ending. Papoy
passed away 9:15 this morning (August 5, 2011). I guess having a
pet for the first time, we did a lot of things wrong and we are partly
to blame for the virus that took away Papoy’s life. But there’s no
question that she was loved and doted on by the family. We only
wanted her to be happy because she made us happy. How I wish
we could have done more. I never thought I would feel like this
for a pet that I cannot even consider all mine but Papoy filled a
void inside me that I cannot explain. She gave so much without
her realizing it. And now I don’t know what to do with myself. I
am so lost and confused. I couldn’t stop crying. I miss her so
much.
I became so used to seeing her smile every day. I thought
she will have a happy and long life with us with lots of
babies and lots of fun memories. Now she is gone and I’m
not even sure if I can soon get over the pain caused by this
unexpected heartbreak. Ah most people will think that
grieving over a dog is lame, after all she was not even a year
old. But she came to my life out of the blue and became a
blessing. Her being there though fleeting will be one of my
greatest joys.
Now, to me it seems that a lot of things I used to
consider valuable is not so important anymore.
Knowing Papoy and the gift that she has given to
me and to my family made me aware of living,
relationships and contentment. I appreciate all
the more that only the love you give and the love
you receive will matter in the end. Keep life
simple and childlike. I know I did, for a time –
with Papoy.
