Qualities of counsellor
1.Encouraging:
 Being encouraging may be the most important quality
of effective counsellor.
 It helps clients learn to believe in their potential for
growth and development.
2. Artistic:
 An effective counsellors tend to

be sensitive and responsive to


their clients.
 Being creative and flexible and

adjusting counseling techniques


to the unique needs of the client.
3. Emotionally Stable:
An emotionally unbalanced

Counselor will probably do more


harm than good for the client.
 Work through serious mental problems.These
counselors may attempt to meet their own needs
4. Empathic and caring :
Counsellors are sensitive to the emotional states of
others and can communicate an understanding of
their struggles with life.
 Clients experience a sense of support and kindness
from these counselors.
This can help the client have the courage to face life
realistically and explore new directions and

Being self-aware enables counsellors to
become aware of their limitations.
It can also help counsellors monitor their
needs, so they can gratify those needs in
manner that doesn't interfere with the

Effective counsellors are constructively open

When counsellors model openness, they
encourage their clients to be open.
7. Courageous:
It is important for clients to perceive their
counselors as competent, counselors are not
perfect, and they should not be viewed as
perfect.
Counselors with the courage to communicate
their weaknesses as well as their strengths are
disclosing an authentic picture of themselves
Counselors should not feel they are too good
for counseling, or they might develop a
condescending attitude about counseling that
could result in looking down at their clients.
8. Positive Self-Image.
A positive self-image can help counselors cope
with their personal and professional life and
maintain the emotional stability that is central to
their job.

Helping someone change is a complex process

Counselors must be patient with the goal of
achieving overall positive therapeutic movement.

Counselors must be careful not to impose their
values and beliefs on the client, even though they

Nonjudgmental communicates a respect for clients
and allows them to actualize their unique potential.
11.Self-Realization:
They reach out in new directions and explore new

Counselors can welcome life experiences and
learn from them.

Skills of a counsellor
Counsellors today are working with
increasingly diverse populations that have
diverse sets of needs
1. Genuine Interest in Others
This one isn’t technically a skill—but it is an
essential component of a counselling career.
A sustained commitment to facilitating
positive transformation and human-to-human
connection
Building a rapport of trust for better
communication.
2. Self-Reflection
An effective therapist knows that it’s just as
important to look within themselves as it is to
carefully observe others.
A counseling student is taught to feel well, think
well, and act well.
3.Ability to Listen – On Multiple Levels
A counsellor needs not only to listen to what is
being said, but how it’s said, why it’s being said,
and what it means in the context of that particular
client.
Think content, delivery, and context. A counsellor
also needs to be able to listen “between the
lines,” so to speak, for those things that aren’t

Don’t be constantly second-guessing your

The best clients understand the value of
an ongoing relationship.
They don’t want to have to “break-in”
