Adverbs of manner.

Adverbs of manner are used to provide


more information about how an action is
performed. They help convey the manner,
style, or method in which an activity or
verb is carried out. Here are some
situations and contexts in which adverbs
of manner are commonly used:
1. Adverbs of manner
They usually take an “ly”. They modify the
verb and show how the action is done.

Examples:
Secret + ly = secretly
Slow + ly = slowly
2. Spelling rules

• Terrible – terribly – adjs that end in le – we


remove the “e”
• Beautiful – beautifully - adjs that end in
“l”, we double the “l”
• Happy – happily BUT shy +ly = shyly

• True + ly = truly
Irregular adverbs
!!! After linking verbs such as: seem,
sound, look, be, become we use an
adjective, not an adverb.

e.g. He seems tired.


e.g. The weather became cold.
e.g. You look beautiful.
It's important to note that not all
adverbs of manner end in "-ly." Some
adverbs have irregular forms, like
"fast," "hard," and "well."
Additionally, some adjectives and
adverbs share the same form, such as
"fast" (adjective) and "fast" (adverb).

Commenting adverbs.

Commenting adverbs are words that express the speaker's or


writer's attitude or opinion about the statement they are making.
These adverbs are used to provide additional information or
context about the speaker's perspective on the action or
situation described. They help convey emotions, attitudes, or
opinions to make the communication more nuanced. Here are
some common commenting adverbs and examples.
Commenting adverbs.

1. Interestingly:
The experiment, interestingly, yielded unexpected results.
2. Surprisingly:
Surprisingly, he managed to finish the project ahead of
schedule.
3. Unfortunately:
Unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate for our outdoor
event.
4. Fortunately:
Fortunately, we were able to resolve the issue before it
escalated.
Commenting adverbs.

5. Clearly:
She explained the concept clearly, making it easy for
everyone to understand.
6. Frankly:
Frankly, I don't think that's a good idea.
7. Honestly:
Honestly, I didn't expect him to be so supportive.
8. Apparently:
Apparently, the company is going through some major
changes.
Examples.

1. She certainly knows how to cook.

2. The weather was perfect for the picnic, fortunately.

3. He finished the project surprisingly ahead of


schedule.

4. I frankly don't agree with your decision.
