Lesson 4 Perform Estimation

Farmers must estimate labor needs and resources for crop production including: 1. Estimating labor for land preparation using tools like tractors, hoes, animals and hand tractors. 2. Estimating labor for planting including pulling seedlings and transplanting. 3. Estimating labor for plant care like applying fertilizers, pest control, irrigation, weeding, harvesting, threshing rice and corn, drying grains, and storing crops.

AGRICULTUR Lesson 4: Perform

AL
CROP Estimation
PRODUCTION
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
• Job requirements are identified from written or
oral communication.
• Quantities of materials and resources required to
complete a work task are estimated.
• Time needed to complete a work activity is
estimated.
• Accurate estimate for completion are made.
• Estimate of materials and resources are reported
to appropriate persons
FARM INPUTS
SEEDS

Seeds are used to propagate many crops such as

cereals, legumes, forest trees, turfgrasses, and
pasture grasses.
FERTILIZER

Fertilizers are generally defined as "any material, organic or inorganic,

natural or synthetic, which supplies one or more of the chemical elements
required for the plant growth."
INSECTICIDES

Insecticides are pesticides that are formulated to kill, harm, repel or

mitigate one or more species of insect.
FARM LABOR
LABOR REQUIREMENT FOR LAND PREPARATION:
Plowing using tractor

With “plowing” it's intended that process which allows to remove

horizontal clods from the soil.
Clearing of the land using hoe

Weeding with a hoe includes agitating the surface of the soil or

cutting foliage from roots, and clearing the soil of old roots and
crop residues.
Plowing using animal

A farmer works the land with horses and carabao. The prime purpose of
ploughing is to turn over the uppermost soil, bringing fresh nutrients to the
surface while burying weeds and crop remains to decay.
Harrowing using hand tractor

The hand tractor is a self-propelled machine used

for plowing, harrowing, and leveling of field.
LABOR REQUIREMENT IN PLANTING:
PULLING OF SEEDLINGS

Pull the seedlings in the seedbed a day before transplanting. Pull the seedlings
carefully with few seedlings at a time to reduce root damage. Wash the roots
to remove the soil.
TRANSPLANTING OF SEEDLINGS

Transplantation is the technique in which a plant is moved from one location to

other. It involves growing of seedlings or seeds in a piece of well managed and
protected land called nursery.
LABOR REQUIREMENT FOR PLANT CARE:
FERTILIZER APPLICATION

Fertilizer application, either directly onto the plant or to the soil, is the most direct
cultural intervention when nutrient deficiencies threaten to limit crop yield or quality.
PEST CONTROL

Pest control is the process of managing and preventing pests, such as insects,
rodents, and other animals, from causing damage to crops, plants, and other
agricultural areas.
IRRIGATION

Irrigation is the process of supplying water in fields through

manmade sources like wells, under-ground water, small and big
dams etc.
WEEDING

Remove unwanted plants from (an area of ground).

HARVESTING

Harvesting is the process of removing your produce (fruits, vegetables and

root crops) from the plant when mature, at the time they are ready for
immediate consumption, sale or storage.
TRESHING RICE
\

Threshing is the process of separating the grain from the straw. It

can be either done by hand, by using a treadle thresher or
mechanized.
DRYING RICE

Drying is the process that reduces grain moisture content to a safe level
for storage. Drying is the most critical operation after harvesting the rice
crop. Proper Drying will maintain grain quality and minimize losses.
TRESHING CORN

to beat or rub stalks of ripe corn or a similar crop either with a

hand implement or a machine to separate the grain from the husks
and straw.
DRYING CORN

"Drying" is the phase of the post-harvest system during which

the product is rapidly dried until it reaches the "safe-moisture"
level.
STORING

"Storage or Storing” means the phase of the post-harvest system

during which the products are kept in such a way as to guarantee
food security other than during periods of agricultural production
