Device drivers are software programs that enable hardware devices to work with an operating system. They act as activators to allow devices to perform their full functionality. Drivers may be required for both internal components like video cards as well as external peripherals like printers. While plug-and-play devices can work without driver installation, installing the correct drivers provides additional functionality and options. If drivers are not installed properly, devices may not function as intended or certain ports and features may be unusable. Preparing and installing the proper drivers requires identifying the hardware specifications and brand to find matching drivers online or via installation discs.
