Week 6

This document discusses polynomials and polynomial equations. It defines polynomials as mathematical expressions made up of variables, coefficients, and operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and non-negative integer exponents. The document covers topics such as the standard form of polynomials, polynomial division and the related concepts of quotients, remainders, synthetic division, the remainder theorem, and the factor theorem. It provides examples and problems involving these polynomial concepts.

Priming Activity:
Look at each pair of expressions below. Identify the expression
that is not a polynomial from each. Give reasons for your
answers.
A B
1. +1
2.
3.
4.
5.
Polynomial:
+1 A polynomial expression should not have a
variable in the denominator

A polynomial expression should not have

negative exponents
variables in a polynomial expression should not have
fractional exponents
A polynomial expression should not have
a variable in the denominator
Polynomial:
is a mathematical expression
consisting of variables
(indeterminates), coefficients, and the
operations of addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and non-negative
integer exponents.
Polynomial:
An algebraic expression of the
form
+ + +…
+ +,≠0
Where: n – degree of polynomial
Polynomial Expression:
STANDARD FORM –
terms in decreasing
powers of the variable x.
Division
Polynomials
EXAMPLE:
Perform the indicated division and write your
answers in the form = Q +
Synthetic
Division
EXAMPLE:
Use synthetic division to find the quotient and remainder
on each of the following and write your answers in the
form Q +
Remainder
Theorem
The Remainder Theorem:
If the polynomial P(x) is
divided by (x – r), the
remainder R is a constant and
is equal to P(r).
The Remainder Theorem:
Two ways to find the remainder when P(x) is
divided by (x – r)
1. Use synthetic division
2. Calculate P(r)
Two ways to find the value of P(r)
1. Substitute r in the polynomial
expression P(x)
2. Use synthetic division
Example:
1. Find the remainder when (
2. Find the remainder when (
3. Find the remainder when (
4. Find the remainder when
P(x) =(
Factor
Theorem
The Factor Theorem:

The polynomial P(x)

has (x – r) as a factor
if and only if P(r) = 0
Example:
Use the Factor Theorem to determine whether or
not the first polynomial is a factor of the second.
Then give the remainder if the second polynomial is
divided by the first polynomial.
